I've got a few things in the fire but this weekend I needed to just focus on something else. At the moment I'm out of lapping film so no more heads for a while.

Anyway to come to the point I had these 3 headstacks sitting arouund waiting for me to get to them to relap. Two from 388's and 1 from A br-20 with Timecode.

The 388 heads are a 2 head design (one rec/playback one erase) 8 tracks on 1/4" tape. One of the headstacks had been relapped by JRF in the past. It needed the least lapping to bring it up to snuff. The other had deeper wear but these heads appear to have a pretty deep gap so they could be relapped a few times. In any case I elected to take the minimum material off the heads.

The BR-20 with time code was not too bad to do. They took twice the time of the 388 heads due to my caution (Timecode heads are a little rare or expensive). They came out nice.

I elected to not do the erase heads. They are ferrite and glass for the BR and looked good. For the 388 they are ferrite and metal with just a little wear on the metal. Ferrite can get micro chips which are quite sharp and thus hard on tape. I was being cautious.

Here is a not so good photo....

Regards, Ethan

PS I ecpect the owner to chime in some time soon. We will see how long it takes him to read this and respond. The clock is ticking

Not the owner speaking but I *think* I'm familiar with the previous condition of these heads. Ethan, it looks like you've perfectly restored the factory contour on these. Great job, really.:)

Oooooooooooooo....mmmmmmmmmmm.....!!!!!!!!!!!

I hereby claim ownership, AND I'm the owner!

I started sweating over an hour ago when I first saw the post but haven't responded until now...I'm on a mobile device so I cannot yet look at the picture in full scale, but...I'm...really...excited.

Ethan, thanks. I know you've got a ton of stuff going on on several levels...I also want everybody to be clear that there WAS an arrangement here (i.e. for Ethan's protection I don't want to start an onslaught of people wanting their heads relapped thinking its always a free deal), BUT I'm CERTAIN I got the better end of the deal...QUITE certain.

Thank you again, this is amazing. I'll be able to finally set my BR-20T up as well as the 388 along with a spare block for the 388. Analog gold.

Can't wait to get a better look. ;)

I'm ouut of town for a few days so you will have to wait....

If you don't feel you have paid enough you can always send more :)

wow...

Just looked at the pic you posted on a PC monitor...wow, man, THAT is amazing...can't wait to see more. Modern-day craftsmanship right there.

Ethan, hopefully I'm a decent tipper...you want your tip in a pancake of 1/4" GP9 or 1/2" SM911?

[EDIT]

Just out of curiosity, Ethan, is the 388 block previously lapped by JRF on the left?
