I'm thinking about getting a tiny, 5 or 10 gig HD for the OS and apps, and an 80 gig drive for recorded audio. The music I record is progressive rock/metal and pop/new age fusion. I don't expect to go much above 24 tracks. Will an 80 gig do the job? I plan to produce my own music and that of others, so a few albums worth of recordings will probably wind up there.

imo 80 gig is very small when you talk about recording about 24 tracks.

I would go with a 200gig BUT I'm sure it's possible to do the job with 80gig. You might have to compress some audio tho or burn it on cds or dvds.

80 holds quite a lot of material even at 24x24x44k, but everything fills up eventually.
You might want to consider a back-up also. I settled on a pair of 80 gigs, with at least the back-up drive(s) in pull-out trays. That's one way to do it.

Get some thing like maybe a 120 and find partition magic 8 somewhere then you can split it into a 110gb and a 10gb or somthing like that.

Is there any advantage in partions other than being able to defrag in seperate chuncks? You don't get any physical redundancy.

Due to my budget restraints, I think I'm going to go with an 80 gig and have a separate 6 gig drive for Windows. If I need more space, I've got a million CDs I can burn data to, if I need to.

from what i know about it is that it just splits a hard drive making your computer think that its 2(or more) hard drives so if you get a virus on your os drive the other music drive isn't touched. Theirs more to it but I just don't know anymore about it.

Hey Progger, where did you find a 6 gig harddrive?

It's in a really old linux box whose motherboard got fried by the power supply several months back. It's an old Dell 266 MHz p2.

Would a 4.3GB harddrive be enough to install Windows XP Pro on?

80G is more than enough! A 3 1/2 min song, full 24 track, 24bit, at 44.1K requires about 667M of disk space. If I were you, I would look for a method to back up your data (e.g., DVD burner).

hey.. i think u might wanna either keep that one drive.. the small one.. for ONLY windows... or get a bigger one if you plan to put more on it.. cause even if you have a lil... its the drive that has win. on it.. which is the OS of the computer.. so its got to be able to run smooth for everything else to run smooth.. just a thought.
