They're bringing out a new Hawaii 5-0 show this fall and they just revealed the theme song, which (thankfully) is basically unchanged from the original.

Awhile ago I sequenced it so I could use it at gigs to be stupid. It doesn't sound ace because it's all 100% Roland SoundCanvas (SC-8850) and if I were "really" doing it I'd at least use real cymbals and a few horns.

I've got the tempo at 179 bpm but it sure sounds funny at 079. Here's both versions:

It's kinda interesting to hear the tracks (drums especially) at the slow tempo. Johnny Guerin sure played a cool drum track on the original, and I copied it all as best as I could.

Dan 'em Book-O!

What "plugin" do I need to listen? I'm a little antsy about downloading plugs without sussing them out 1st - sorry.

One of the all time great TV themes.

When I blew trumpet our high school stage band played this for a concert.

Can't wait for the new series.

I don't believe you need any plug in or anything, the songs are on my website which is all prehistoric HTML. Just mp3's, that's it.

Cool stuff dintymoore, nicely written and well balanced. You're right about needing real horns (the drum are cool for me). The trumpets need a wee bit of tail end or sustain on the notes as they tend to "end" a little faster than the orig. But other than that it note for note perfect. The other horns - trombones ?? have a great sound.

Thanks :)

It's, to me, amazing that SoundCanvas sounds as good as it does.

Listening to it now it sounds like the whole track could use some reverb. But these are my tracks for gig backup, and I mix them differently than I would other stuff. I tend to use minimal reverb because some rooms I'm in add too much and then it's chaos.

My usual thing is to get my friend who is a great trumpet player to lay down parts on top of my synths, here's how that comes out http://musicmusicmusic.cn/copshowa.html

Maybe I should do that with the slow version, it sounds so stupid and I think it would be funny in a video.

Is anybody having trouble with this link?

http://musicmusicmusic.cn/5-0.html

Can you play the two versions of the song when you go to that page?

The reason I asked is because one of my friends said it won't load on his computer.

thanks, and please let me know what computer OS you're using and the browser (Safari, Firefox) if it doesn't work. :)

Dint,
I'm running XP SP3 with Moz Firefow 363 & when I take that link I get a page that has musicmusicmusic across the top 179 bpm with a plug in link then 79bpm with the same plugin link.
I don't have quicktime on my comp so it may be that is the issue.

Here's how it looks on the Mac, which calls up a Quicktime player. In the past, on Windows systems my pages like this have called up a Realplayer set of controls. So are you saying on your XP you cannot play the songs?

Why the 079 version? Just out of curioisty?

... Why the 079 version? Just out of curioisty?

The reason for the 079 version was mainly because I thought it sounded funny, and for me also it's interesting to hear the drum track at that speed.

The drummer who played the original was Johnny Guerin, who played on tons of stuff from the Seals and Crofts and Michael Franks to Zappa to Tom Scott to Sinatra. He also played the drums on Clint Eastwood's movie "Bird".
