Having trouble converting...

I am new to this board, and I'm sure this problem comes up very often, but I have read through the FAQ and tried what it said, but it didn't work. So I appreciate any help any of you fine folks may give.

I have a Roland XP-60 keyboard and Cakewald Home Studio 9. I have hooked the keyboard up to my computer using a Midiman 2in/2out USB box, which plugs into the computer through a USB port. I want to record my midi songs onto a CD using the keyboard's sounds, NOT my soundcard's voices. I know this involves re-recording the MIDI tracks as wav audio, and I tried doing what the FAQ said:

"Here's how to re-record any MIDI tracks that are played on your external sound modules or instruments:

1. Connect the audio outputs of your MIDI instruments to the line inputs of your sound card."

This is what I achieve by using the Midiman box, correct?

I took all the steps, but nothing is recorded onto the armed track.

I have no problems listening to the tracks through my keyboard setup, but I just can't record a new file using the keyboard's sounds.

I appreciate any feedback. If there is another topic on this board that addresses my exact problem, a link would be just as helpful. Thanks!

I know that my USB port is enabled because I can play something on the keyboard and record it onto a track in CW, and I can also listen to my songs using the keyboard's voices, so it works. I just cannot re-record what I have already sequenced using Cakewalk.

I checked the Midiman with the metronome, and the LED lights flash to it. It is set up correctly, with the button depressed on the front.

My Roland XP-60 is the only synth I'm using. It does have an onboard sequencer, but I do my sequencing in Cakewalk, not on the keyboard.

This is what I have tried using the Midiman, as the FAQ says to do: The Midiman Out comes up under the Port setting, not the source setting. Under the source, I believe is what the FAQ says to set as my Soundblaster Out (I cannot select a Soundblaster In). I also check the "select" option under "Line In" on my computer's volume control, as the FAQ says. And then I arm a new track, and solo one track of my song and hit record. The meters go nowhere, and nothing is recorded.

I could try plugging the synth directly to my soundcard, but on the back of my keyboard, the only 1/4" jack is an output jack. There are no 1/4" input jacks, only midi cable hookups. Can I record the tracks using just an output jack? If that will work, I will try it. Thanks for your reply!

assuming you want your keys in stereo, get a stereo(trs) y- adapter- (2)- 1/4" mono (female) to (1)- 1/8"stereo (male) at radio shack or your local music store. hook the adapter ,as c7 said, right into your sound blasters line in. that will get you rockin, arm a track, choose your sblaster as an input source, and have fun. after you get use to that, try using sblasters synth and soundfonts to record midi to audio without leaving the computer. good luck, keith

You're confused between MIDI and Audio...

The MIDIMan just does the MIDI information, not the audio. On the synth there are MIDI ports (which you have plugged in) and audio outs (which seem to be hooked up to some sort of spreaker, since you can hear it). To convert the MIDI to audio yoiu need to have the audio outputs (in addition to the MIDI) connected to you soundcard. Thats the way the sound get into you computer.

Ah, I think I understand now. There are four 1/4" output jacks on the back of my keyboard. Left/Right Mix Output and Left/Right Direct Output. I have neither plugged into my computer. I didn't think I needed to because I thought the Midiman did all that. I guess it just does the MIDI aspect, which is why I can playback my MIDI sequences, and even record from my keyboard as MIDI sequences, but not record any audio (.wav) data.

Ok, so from here, I need to plug the wires that c7 mentioned from my L/R Direct Outputs to the soundcard? And then everything will be set up correctly? I guess I only have half the setup I need right now.
