If only for a moment.....
Has anyone had a song come to them while they were asleep or woken up with a song in their head ? If so, did it all seem to arrive complete or did you have to do alot of work on it once you were awake ? Were you pleased or disappointed with it when it was done ?

Never in a dream, but I've had several just materialize right as I'm waking up or drifting off to sleep, and I think those have been my better songs. I'll either get up and write the ideas down or type and save them into the notepad on my phone.

Just out of interest, did words come with any of them or was it just music ?

Yeah, I don't think most of what happens in my dreams would make too much sense even if I could write it down. . .

I did have an inspiration for a song while falling asleep once - I went out to the piano and 40 minutes later I had the instrumentals ready to record. Doesn't happen very often though.

Yes, one time a few years ago I had a dream, and man, let me tell you; the tune in my dream would have been a hit if I could have got that exact same sound from it. It didn't have vocals on it, but more importantly I forgot the melody when I woke up.

The best music I've ever heard in my life has come to me in my dreams. Unfortunately, it's usually way too mind-blowing to come out during my waking life. Of course, if I had the time to sit there and figure it out, maybe I'd have something. There is one piece I came out with in real life that has that dream-like quality to it. It feels good when I play it, and it sounds nothing like any music that I listen to.

Words and music. My newest song in the clinic "Shit Eating Grin" was written as a I woke up one morning. It basically wrote itself. When it came time to record it, it was like I was doing a cover song. That's happened many times with me. Last summer I wrote a song called "On My Own" while on a 2 week fishing vacation. I had no access to anything. I just had a pen, paper, and my phone. I came up with the riff, arrangement, and words all in my head and just jotted down what I could. I don't know any music theory, but i know the notes on a guitar and how intervals sound, so my notes probably look pretty funny. But it worked. Sometimes there's a lot of time between fish bites. I even tapped out the drums on my lap while sitting there in the sun. When I got home, again, it was like doing a cover song. I had it so clearly defined in my head, it basically recorded itself.

What a bummer!

Not in a dream but I had one hit me while I was taking a shower. Melody, words, breaks....The weird part is it took about 3 months, little by little, to finally come out. But it was pretty much what I heard in my head when it DID come out. Other tunes pretty much write themselves but a couple have taken months.
Go figure.

Haha, it happened again this morning. Full words and music popped into my head 5 minutes before the alarm went off. I gotta get some scratch tracks down...........
