Made an order through Sweetwater for a pair of PS6s and some Auralex foam a couple of weeks ago. As I live pretty far away the shipping came up to about US$250. Painful, I thought, but hell I needed em and there ain't no local distributors where I live. A few days ago I sent an email to The Sound Room inquiring about their shipping prices....and I got a darn shock. US$25 for two mics???? I remember Sweetwater quoting me 80 bucks on shipping for the Rode NT1!!! Question is - have I been taken for a goddam ride??? Tell me fellas, I can take it...
 
The auralex stuff is shipped in 2 large boxes... that probably results in higher shipping, but I don't understand the $80 for a mic... how far away from Indiana do you live??

Only thing I've ever ordered from Sweetwater is contact cleaner and acessories and shipping was reasonable ($20-30) to Ontario, Canada...

I would hesitate to pay that high shipment charges and I live in Sweden so almost all shipments are "overseas". US$80 for domestic shipping of a cheap mic is way over the limit. I have been quoted US$50 in shipping for a tube mic including power supply and that was from China to Sweden, i.e. halfway across the planet...and I thought it was too expensive.

As Bruce said though, the foam is understandable as it's a big parcel but still, $250 is pretty much. I think that's what a friend of mine paid for shipping a octave mandolin from the US to Sweden.

There's one thing I forgot to tell u guys....I live in South East Asia!!! What I don't understand is how The Sound Room can quote me 25 bucks for two mics and Sweetwater 80 bucks for one! Anyways, two swift fingers to Sweetwater, that's the last time they rip me off, methinks...
 
To be fair, though, Sweetwater's a big outfit, I seriously doubt they're intentionally trying to rip you off. Call them back and tell them what their competition is charging, then see what they say... it may have soemthing to do with their particular distribution lines -- all of which means part of what you need to do when you buy mail/web-order is shop around for competitive shipping rates as well as the product you're buying!

South-east Asia, that puts things in a new perspective:)

Try to find a dealer in Asia or Australia. That should cut the shipping cost to at least below the price for the actual gear:D

Ola - guess again. Buying from Oz means buying expensive. It's cheaper straight from the States - cuts out one middleman.
 
Dobro, that depends on where the goods is made and/or distrubuted. Buying from the US is rarely cheaper for me as the import taxes etc. are high. The Röde mic for example is most likely made in asia (797Audio?) and the company is Austrian.
 
Sweetwater's not alone it seems. Just got a quote from Bayview Pro Audio for the shipping of their Delta 1010/Vegas bundle. $105 bucks!!! This is getting very depressing indeed...

Thomanns site is only in german, and Musicians-gear order products ONLY by manufacturer... Looks like I'll continue trotting down to Estrad here in Stockholm when I need something. :)

Are there any sites in Europe that are good?
 
No they all suck but they're dirt cheap compared to Estrad:) That's why I bother. They could have a notepad pricelist and nothig else for all I care, as long as they're cheap. I get the info elswhere.
 
Thomann seemed cheap at least, I checked the price on an MPC200XL (although a Nord Modular is more expensive). They don't say if the price quote with or without VAT though... You know?

On the positive side: If they all suck, I can start a pan european site and make heaps o money! :)
 
Rode's Australian, not Austrian. When the price of NT-1s dropped recently in the US, I could get one shipped from the States for about the same price I'd pay here in Singapore.

dobro, how do you normally get your stuff? i didn't know Event had a distributor in Singapore!! oh sh*t....
 
So far, except for two soundcards, I've bought everything here in Singapore, because what I've wanted either doesn't come cheaper ordering it from source after you add in shipping and insurance, or else it's worth having the dealer handy in case something goes wrong.

If you want, I'll photocopy and mail you the Singapore yellow pages for 'Sound'. I didn't know Event had a distributor here either, though. :D
 
Let's ban together and help the non-americans out. We must save our friend from being raped buy these corprate scum! We have it easy here, I have to drive a half hour to my local guitar satan, costing me no more than $5 in gas. I could not afford much if i had to pay $80 shipping costs for one mic. We should be able to find away to help our fellow man out here folks. We need answers! Dragon, do you still have your boat? Lets make a trip to singapore and visit dobro and pals. Stashed in the hull we will have a boat load of c1000's, d112's, art pre's and all the event 20/20's you could ever need!
 
Oops, how embarrasing.:o Well, it should be even cheaper to get it to Asia then, shouldn't it?
