You've probably already decided by now, but I just want to say that I'm really impressed with my Sabian El Sabor hats. I bought them with live in mind, but they sound great recorded.

I second that. A thin crash explodes pretty naturaly. A thick crash you have to really lay into or it sounds like hitting the edge of a ride if you're not playing really hard. Darker hi hats settle into the mix better and the highs stick out on their own.

thats why its always a good idea to have a mix. For example, I have Paiste 17" and 20" power crashes (the 17" is signature, the 20" is 2000). But to balance it out, I also have an 18" Signature full crash. In my opinion, (for metal) its best to have a variety of thick and thin cymbals, so that you can play both loudly and softly (like Josh Freese's set. Power crashes for heavy stuff, full crashes for light stuff).

13" New Beat Hi-Hats... cannot go wrong. I'm not a big fan of too much wash in a pair of hats...

I'm buying new hats, mainly for recording, and which of the following do you guys think would be the best:
sabian aax fusion 13"
sabian paragon 13"
zildjian k 13"
zildjian k/z 13"
istanbul mehmet 13" radiant sweet hats
I play a pretty big variety of stuff thanks.

Zildjian mastersound series.
14"'s are nice.

Paiste makes some REALLY nice hats too.

i know that im buying the 13" Zildjian k\z combo when ever i get some money ...I have never heard them on a recording but my friend has then and they sound awesome so im assuming they sound good on a recording

I don't have any problems with recording with heavy hihats. i play a pair of Z-Custom Mastersounds 14" - ok, they're not too heavy - and they sound just awesome.
