I'm reading your humble post, as I have before, and I think you completely miss how important your words, work, time, experience & expertise means to little guys like us homers.
THANKS,
Sean
PS.
I hope you got some type of payment from the advertisers, God know you deserve it.
Nope, the only payment I get is for the forum I moderate over at prosoundweb.com.
Sometimes a manufacturer will cut me some slack on a piece of gear I wannna buy, or let me pay it off over a period of time. It's usually because I've known the dealer or distributor for a long time, back when I was in manufacturing, or they feel they owe me a favor, because I helped them when they were just getting started.
I have received a few freebees (which surpised me since I've never asked for any, nor were they directly linked to any reviews I've done).
Even though I currently have all six of the Studio Project C and B series mics, you won't find them listed on my equipment page, since I don't consider them mine - they're just on loan from Alan. The enclosed invoice was for full retail price, way more than most dealers sell them for. Even though I get on Alan's case every so often, I think he'd agree that I've helped him in many ways (that I won't mention here).
I'm buying the Marshall V69 and the MXL990. Right now, I'm trying to negotiate a better price than "Suggested List", which would put the 990 about $40 over what Musician's Friend sells it for.
So the answer to your question is, I'm not on anybody's payroll; I do this stuff to help people who are just getting started.
Sometimes I get a "bonus" or a special favor from manufacturers. I try to avoid asking people to send me stuff, either to keep, or to review. My income is from my recording studio and that's the way I prefer it.
Like a lot of people here, I prowl ebay and the online dealers, and talk to the bigger dealers around the US, many of whom I've known personally for about the last 4 decades or more.
Ya gotta remember I'm pretty damn old (I'll be 66 in 3 months), and I've been in the music biz for over 50 years.
