usually goes by 3rds or 4ths... 5ths work if you want a gregorian chant sound or a really bad classic rock sound... personally I don't really write it, I just listen to a track, then sing the harmony... then record the harmony. sometimes it might take two or three listens to figure out what harmonies I want to do, but it's not that difficult. just do what you hear in your head.

yeah, i know the best way to do it is trial and error, i just needed somewhere to start. thanks for the advice.

best way to get good at harmonies is to develop you ear. lots of ways to go about it.

to get started - play a simple chord progression and sing any note you hear in each chord. sing only one note per chord. try to keep the line smooth ,not jumpy. then, with the same chords, start singing on a different note and do the same thing. the resulting lines should harmonize, provided you sang notes within each chord. do this a lot and your ear will pull harmonies out of everything.

I record scratch demos and drive around in the car singing harmonies with them myself. Then after I've found them, they can be added to the recording.

I have live tapes of the band playing songs we've done for years and have just gotten around to finding the harmonies on them for the other guys. To develop the ear, I like to listen to something like oldies radio where the songs are ultra-familiar and find harmonies that are not being sung, like on the verses.

I posted a song in the MP3 forum that started out as an acoustic song I sang for my wife. The harmonies we're written until after I'd recorded the acoustic version and listened to it on the way to work a few (hundred) times.
