Anybody has a list of harddiscs for the fostex vf 16???
(the more, the merrier)
the approved discs by Fostex are getting hard to come by...
Thanks!

Western Digital 40gig 7200rpm works in my vf-16

I don't have an updated list (other than the one available on www.vf16.com), but I can tell you that...

I installed a Western Digital 40gig 7200rpm (2mb buffer) hard drive in my VF-16 about a year ago, and it has performed flawlessly (it was not on the official Fostex "approved" list). Upon startup, my VF-16 gives a brief message, about "no drive found", but then it finds the drive and it works great. Nice and quiet, fast (but not too fast), big enough (thought I think a 60 gig would also work and that would be even better).

Ray, this is good info. Could yuo tell us what the model name/number is, please?

Thanks Ray!
I was just contemplating on a Maxtor Diamond 40GB which also runs
on 7200 rpm. The vf 16 does recognize it!
Wizzkids told me the rev.speed shouldn't be a problem.
Seems you just confirmed it!
When ev'rything works out fine, I'll post the ecxact make etc.
Thanks again!

Western Digital Model Number: WD400BBRTL

Hey.

Sorry I didn't originally post the exact model # of the Western Digital hard drive that I installed in my VF-16.

I just dug the box up from my basement. It is model #WD400BBRTL. 40 gig, 7200 rpm, 2mb cache, 8.9 ms average seek time, IDA-ATA interface.

I THINK I sent the jumper to Cable Select, but I can't remember for sure. Took about 1 day to format.

I think the only other thing is...that you should have the latest O/S update installed on your VF-16 in order to recognize the larger hard drives (especially anything over 40 gig). I've got 3.13 installed on mine, and it works great.

HTH,

ray

P.S. Some people on other boards have mentioned that you should stay away from the faster drives for your VF-16 or VF-160 - overheating may be an issue with the really fast drives (> 7200 rpm).

hard drives for vf 16

The (over)heating problem already existed with my (late) Fujitsu 40GB 5400 rpm drive.
The bottomplate was almost too hot to handle at times.
Might even be the reason of it's demise...
Wouldn't an intern cooling fan be nice?...
Gonna try the 7200 rpm anyway!
Not much choice is there?

so far, absolutely no overheating problems with my Western Digital 7200 rpm drive. And I use it alot, and I run it for pretty long sessions (like 5 hours straight with lots of activity). Maybe the ceramic heat sinks on the WD drives are better at disipating (sp) heat than your Fujitsu drive.

Just found out that the Maxtor diamond series do not work on the fostex! :(

too hot too handle...

Now that I installed my WD 400 harddisc, it turns out it gets just as hot as
my former (fried) Fujitsu. After -let's say- 1 hour it gets so hot that it develops a 5000 hz tone that gets louder as the disc heats up.
Apart from that annoying tone, it scares me to think I'm in the process of frying another disc.
So; I'm gonna install a cooling fan or something.
Anybody 's got any experience with that???

Thanks
Cas

Hi everyone.
New to the scene so you will have to bear with me. Is there a difference btween the VF-16 and the V-16? The HDD is knackered in my v-16. Will it take a normal HDD from a PC? I have a few of the drives that are mentioned above. If not, can anyone point me in the right direction. Many Thanks

V-16?

hi.

I'm not quite sure about your reference to a "V-16" - are you sure about the model number? What country are you located in? Could it possibly be a re-branded version of either the VF-16 or the VF-160?

Fostex used to make the VF-16; it was replaced by the VF-160, which was then succeeded by the VF-160ex. They are all essentially the same machines (other than operating system upgrades and some hardward changes), and would accept the same replacement hard drives.

If you meant that you own a VF-16 or a VF-160, then either buy one of the hard drives mentioned in this thread, or go to http://www.vf16.com and click on the link to "Confirmed Media List" to see a list of "officially approved" replacement hard drives.

Good luck.
