alright mac, time to pick your brain on a few more issues.

been listening to hardcore more...it's such a hit song. brilliant. the melody on "got two faces..am i seein double?" genius. anyways..based on the pics you have up:

when you record your vocals, do you have the singer "blocked off" at all, with blankets and such...or just standing in the corner?

which mic did you record the harmonica with? was it blocked off at all as well...? Great harmonica sound...

also, what kick mic are you using for the album? such a nice thump to it...I have the same drumset...and I can't get a great sound out of my kick. and you just mic the set as is in the room?

Trying to figure out that magic sound...your the only guy on these boards I've heard so far that I say "man...i want to sound like that"

thanks!

Hi wes!

On recording the vocals, tried at first standing in a closet, putting blankets up, etc., went through all kinds of crap cuz doing the edgy type singing was sounding absolutely horrible. Finally figured out it was the TLM103. So, after smashing the TLM into a million pieces, now just set the mic up, Rode NTK these days, (if I'm doing the vocal, then pretty much right in front of the computer, if Max, then just behind me, wherever.)

The harmonica was recorded with an AT4033, I think. Not blocked off.

The mics on the drums are: Rode NTK overhead, D112 in the kick, and the AT4033 out in front of the kick a few feet back. When doing the drums, I move them around so I'm sitting next to the computer. Experimented tons before settling on this, though, still not really happy. I think you got a great sound on your kit (except maybe the kick, I suppose.) I'm gonna ask you your setup on your thread.

Thanks again wes,
Macle

I've listened to your work before and I must say that you have good musicmanship.

SOmething about the general sound disturbs me though. It is either the mp3 conversion or the ad converters. Its not bad, it just sounds wierd.

Hi Cyan,
Thanks for checking out the song. Hmmm, I don't suppose you could try and describe what you're hearing. I'm really curious to know.

Thanks,
Macle

no doubt.

THe song is off the hook. Very catchy, and a very nice singer. I think I'm just more picky because its a paris. If this came off a echo mia I would have no complains at all.

OK as to the wierd sound. I think its in the conversion somewhere. The high end is rolled off in a way that makes the instuments(piano and guitar) sound a bit plastickey. It makes the vocal sound warm but in a veiled way.

I'm compaaring to someone like faith hill of course.

this is an awesome song by any measure.

edit: the space is also suspect. What box are you using?

Scott said: holy shit I mean WOW. Hey macle, how did you get the guitar sound on the elctric guitar at 1min 6sec. That kind of Harrison-leslie cabinet thing. Is it a peddle or a pluggin. I can hear it throughout the rest of the song too. Love it. Very apropriate.

Hi Scott, thanks! The leslie sound is from a Digitech RP2000, which I don't have anymore, I didn't really use it, except for that, and maybe a couple of other sound effect type things. Thanks a lot!

Hey joro, thank you! The handclaps are real! Hmmm, that's a bummer. I wonder why they don't sound real?! Thanks a lot!

Hi Cyan, thanks for the quick reply!

A factor, too, could be my "mastering", in which I'm sure I'm doing more damage than good. Running it through the L1 and compressing a bit, etc., but I do it to get a little volume for posting, so hopefully, real mastering will make a great difference.

But, also, I have a tendency to go for a more veiled sound, I suppose, as opposed to airy, like, I'm guessing Faith Hill is (not that I could achieve that Faith Hill sound, as I would think that is some major studio polish!!) But, usually, I tend to go for things more analoguey, tubey, veiled, etc.

Someone on the Paris board said Paris is more veiled, as compared to something like Nuendo and a Delta card or something, which is more airy. I've been thinking about switching when I'm done with this project, especially since Paris is sort of over, though I do like Paris, but the grass is always greener. I don't like the thought that the piano and guitar sound plasticky!!

As far what box I'm using, are you talking about reverb? I'm just using the Paris reverb, which I really don't like. Probably why I tend to use very little reverb, or usually pretty short reverbs. Looking forward to getting a decent reverb, for sure.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, and any other thoughts are greatly appreciated!!

Hi H2H,

I did take the MP3s down, so I don't believe you're losing your mind. I was going to mess with the site, try to improve it, but I've been too wrapped working on music...anyway, I put Hardcore back up for you. Look forward to your thoughts.

Thanks,
Macle

For some reason, it only let me get about 15 seconds of the song...but I really liked what I heard. Your vocal sound, and you and your gf's abilities are exceptional. I'll have to get your vocal tricks from you one of these days!!

Hi H2H,
Sorry about the download. Maybe a browser thing, or ...? The bummer is, right at 16 seconds, the song goes in a completely different direction, slams into a rap/metal thing. Thanks very much for trying, and thanks for the vocal compliments. :)
