The Pie Guy
Been quite a while since I posted a tune here....

This is a new band tune written by Peter Spiller (lead guit) and Ulli (lead vox) from the band City Point from Boston.....

we use our rehearsal space as a studio and we are working on an 3 track EP to send out for potential bookings....this is one of the tunes...

I used an sm 58 for the strat through a Fender Chorus amp (solid state)
the distorted guit is my Les Paul through a POD 2.0 (my Nomad 55 is in the shop)
lead vox is through 57....
drums are miced high and low...two MXl 990s for overheads...2- Sennheiser MD421-IIs for the toms...a 58 for the snare and a AKG D-112 for the kick

signal chain is Mackie 1402 Vlz Pro into a Delta 10/10 (with a dedicated Genex wordclock) into CEP2.0....

waddaya think fellas?
The tune is called...Hard......it's at Soundclick....

Hey man very nice tune!

I don't comment on songs here very often but I felt compelled to on this one. Here a few thoughts both good and bad.

You guys have skill both as musicians and songwriters but very little as audio engineers.

If I was the club owner you past this disc to, I might hire you on the vocal track because it's written so well and the boy can freakin sing.

But club owners listen to several discs every year and yours better be a killer mix or they'll listen to 30 sec and toss it.

Although If you're using this as a learning tool to become better at recording, then please disregard all the above.

Bands these days are having a hard time getting the foot in the door because of the same problem. They want to save money by doing the recording themselves only to break up a few Months later because nobody will hire them based solely on what they listen to on a disc produced by great musicians that know almost nothing about recording.

Again I add....Very Nice Tune guys. After listening to it three times, Hell ya man I would buy a produced copy of this tune.

too cool...thanks man...I really appreciate the comments.....especially about the lack of skills with the recording.

I said the same thing to the rest of the band....I said we should go to a pro studio for 2 days and get three songs done......

I told them that I was not confident in my abilities to make it good enough....

and this critique reinforced my thoughts.....

BTW...2 things ....

there is absolutely no sarcasm intended in what I just typed....I feel the same way you do about it...

the singer...Ulli....is a girl....Peter is singing harmony vox...

Thanks again man...much appreciated.
Joe

It's all-cool....just wanted to help out if I could.
No sarcasm felt on my end.

I didn't see the chick singer thing coming though.
It must've been the quality of the recording. dunno?
OK, the Girl can sing!

Good Luck

Nice gtr sound in the beginning, for sure. But this song is definately a ripoff of some other song, ...but for the life of me can't think of it. When the singing really comes in, it gets out of that mode though.

Pretty thumpy sounding drums, for the negative.

I do like the singers voice, if it were to let loose a little more. The song is a goodie.. good melodies, etc... but I swear, that chord change and vocal humming in the intro is from something else... it'll come to me.

yeah...take the duct tape off the drum heads...get some ring going and tune 'em up!

thanks fellas...

mixmkr dude....

the drums have all brand new Evans heads on them...all the way around....perhaps they do need to be tuned...the cymbals are also brand new....... Zildjan Kustom Ks and Kustom As mixed.....

Thanks for checking it out man...I am gonna re-mix and perhaps re-track the drums completely...perhaps better mic isolation will help.
Thanks again,
Joe

They just sounded dead and kinda thumpy to me. Like there was a piece of cloth over the heads that didn't let them ring out. That was THE sound in the 70's with some good natural reverb on them, and you could have gotten away using phone books as drums on much of the stuff back then IN MY OPINION!! But...you loose a note reference and a more natural sound of the drum to me. I still like the song... love that intro guitar stuff.

Mic positioning on toms is important. The trick I use is to imagine pinstripes on the heads, and point the mic, less than an inch from the top pinstrip, to the opposite pinstripe on the bottom head. You get the whole sound of the drum that way.

Kick drum mics (if you only have one) can be placed in the hole on the skin of the kick, positioning the diaphram roughly even with the skin -- pointing inwards.. perhaps angled towards the beater.

Its sounds pretty good, It's not my style because its sounds like something i've heard before and it's something that has no playback material...i like original stuff.

I think the drums sound is not the best. Guitars and vocals sound are pretty good though.

Thanks for the comments and the good info on mic placement fellas...
I appreciate it...

the drum heads do not have any striping but, I know where it usually is....
We are definitely gonna re-track the drums...

Thanks again fellas,
Joe

Hey, you know when I heard it I immediately thought "It sounds so familiar" (the intro vox part). Then I was reading through the posts and others felt the same way... I couldn't put my finger on it, and it was driving me nuts, Kinda' reminded me of that that Nickleback tune "Feelin way too damn good" but that wasn't it then I was thinking of some old Mad Season tune and that wasn't it then it dawned on me.... Creed "Weathered". I'm not 100% sold on the comparison but I think that's where that familiar vox is coming from. Good tune though. I can dig fo' shizzle. Give the Creed song a listen if you havn't heard it and lemme know what you think.

Perdicament dude...I listened to the Creed tune and it's a super good tune and yeah..the styling is similar but, it's different other than that....
Thanks for checking out the tune man...

We re-tracked the drums completely and a new mix is up at Soundclick.... ...check it out fellas...I still aint satisfied with the drums but, i am on the right track.........

I think.... :D
