Trailing Behind Again
I hear lots of folks downing Zoom pedals for recording, and I even echoed it, but I had to try it anyway. I was messing around with my 405 acoustic pedal, and found a really sweet tone running my guitar with a sound hole pickup, so I figured I'd record it. :eek: MAN DID IT EVER SOUND LIKE ASS! The reason was the reverb on the unit was so saturated it made the recording sound tinny, even though it sounded good coming from my amp. The unit is great for live sound. It allows you to play an acoustic through a standard guitar amp and still sound like an acoustic. But my MR-8 didn't think so! I got so mad I almost threw it away, but I didn't. I am going to try it again and see if I can get that tone with the reverb off. I hope I can! Anyone tried something like this with a Zoom pedal, specifically the 405II acoustic? I don't want to waste another half hour of my life and get similar results. I usually mic my acoustic, but I only have the one dynamic mic and no mic pre's (yet), so I don't really like the sound. I got the pedal hoping for a cheap alternative, but it looks like maybe I wasted my time. The pedal cost $50.00 US. Is there a comparitively priced mic pre that will give me the results I want? I know the pre amp on the MR-8 is lacking, and yes, budget is a concern. Thanks!
 
One note. My signal chain for the busted recording was just the guitar with the sound hole pickup into the Zoom, into the MR-8. Maybe I should run it into the amp and mic it?
 
Yeah, try micing it. You can edit the Zoom patches and reduce or get rid of the reverb.
 
I'll turn it off in both. When I record my electric guitar through the amp, it's always a dry signal. I only use the distortion sparingly if at all, and the reverb on the amp is turned off. Thanks, hopefully I will get that tone I am hearing through the amp. It is SWEET!
 
rokket. do you have any software effects in your recording software ?
you might try recording to the amp with just a weeny touch of effect, then duplicating the track in recording software. and delaying the duplicate by a smidgen. try various values up to 10 msecs.
frankly fyi i went thru what i call pedal-itis , and finally got so teed off with pedals, i now rent (i also have lots of pedals)becos new ones come out so fast. also there are some neat sites if you google for building some very nice funky diy pedals. just insert in google search engine "diy guitar pedal".
lots of schematics around. if i remember one site is called ampage.

My software is LOADED with effects. I can use both directX and VST, so I have every conceivable effect available. That's why I record dry. I remember you told someone it's easier to add then to take away, so that's become my mantra. I am going to give the Zoom one more shot to comp this tone on digital, then probably take it back and trade it for a good pre amp if it still sucks! :D
 
check out this plug in sometime.
its a research project by what seems some puter engineers/scientists
like me. its free. they are trying to emulate different guitar amps and effects in software. plus its free !

try some of the jcm and other settings.
also - go to noisevault.com and you will find a very interesting world open up to you whereby people are trying to use the SIR plug in to emulate various high end devices like lex reverbs, and high end mic preamps etc.
really really read this site. its very interesting.and shows the future of multitrack recording where any kid with a junk mic and preamp will (hopefully) be able to make it sound like a neumannn mic thru a 2k mic preamp. on the subject of mic pre's...try a dmp3 or ranems1b sometime.

I've been meaning to try that simulanalog thing, too.

Maybe I'll have time this weekend.
