hard drive recording

It depends on how good you are at ripping stuff apart and putting it back together again :D

In all seriousness, if your talking the standalone HD recorders, as far as I have read and understood, you don't take out the HD's. My friend had a BR-8 and another friend has a BR-1180 and with both of them, you can hook them up to computers to dump the data down if you want to, to open up HD space. The 1180 has a CD burner built in...I am not sure if it just does audio CDr's, of it can put the data down as a data CD.

Hope this helps.
