Would a 7,200 RPM Western Digital Ultra ATA Hard drive with 2MB cache work with todays software such as Cubase, ProTools etc. or would I need the above mentioned drive with the 8MB cahe. Thanks For Your Help. PS I'm looking to have a 2 hard drive system one dedicated for recording. Partition? Ah? Thats a question for another day.

The more the merrier but 2MB cache will work just fine.

Cache memory size makes almost no difference in your hard drive's performance. Bigger numbers make for bigger sales, and RAM is cheap. What makes those 8MB cache hard drives perform better is the fact that their areal density (storage space per platter) is much greater than the previous generation of drives. The 2MB cache, 7200RPM 20-80GB generation of HDDs perform very well for recording.
