Hard Disk Recorders

Any information I could get on hard disk recorders would be very helpful, especially about how difficult they are to use, the quality of sound, etc. I would be looking at a 4 or 8 track recorder.

If you are talking about a SIAB, [studio in a box], there are several out there. They operate similar to a PC but there is no big screen or mouse [some do have a mouse.]

If you are looking at PC programs to record, you will have to talk to those folks who use that type of gear -- check the forums.

As for "learning" or "how hard are they to use," well, Diva, the manuals are mostly a vacuum -- Oh, you will get the drift and maybe the manuals are improving? -- however, you will need to search, ask, re-read, re-read, and re-read. Of course, you'll get much help right here at BBS.

So, find someone with a home studio, or visit some vendors, or just go to a studio and ask some questions and, of course, peek in here often.

I bought a Fostex VF-160CDR DAW and received it the Saturday before last. I had already dowloaded the manual for it in advance and could tell the manual would be of little help to a newbie to Standalone DAWs such as myself. From suggestions from the guys at the HR Fostex Forum, I dowloaded a QuickStart Guide at VF-16.com and with that, some extra help here and at VF-16.com, and going through the Program and Setup menus, I was tracking, mixing, saving tracks to CD, and uploading the tracks on my puter by that evening. It's much easier than the Manual seemed to make it.

I started Recording at home a little less than a year ago on a Tascam 414MKII PortaStudio and in in July I bought a Recording Program for the puter and I was going to build a Dediacated Multitrack PC DAW, but wanted a really portable setup to do Remote and Live Remotes so, I went the Standalone DAW route with the Fostex VF-160.

I am a big fan of the Tascam 788, its soooo easy to use, but there are many others out there. Do a search on this site for tons of info.
