ok, so i havent ouched my desktop in over 2 months till today. and my hard disk is screwed. it wants to run scan disk, so i let it do that and there are tons of bad sectors. then i reboot and it runs it again and it always wants to scandisk, and it always fids errors. sometimes it just stalls sometimes it gets to windows eventually by me hitting Exit all the time. then when it gets to widows it doesnt relaly work. its SLOW. then i go to format it, and it starts but a couple minutes into the format it gives an error of the drive wasnt ready while it was trying to reclaim some stuff. then i could never get it to format again. i bought a new hard drive because i want another, but is there anyway for me to fix this thing as its 20Gb and that is a good amount. now it just gives errors that files arent there. and i boot to a prompt and try to run format from the cd ie. a:\format c: but it dont work. it says that c: doesnt exist. i ran fdisk and it says that its alive. anyone know the answer? or should i just punt this HD into the street since the warranty is over?

If you have bad sectors your hdd is basicely f****d.
You could try doing a low level format...which brand is the hdd??
Go on the website for IBM, Maxtor, WD, Seagate or whatever and they'll have some kind of 'diskmanager' you can download to a floppy to use for low level formatting. What it does is it writes zeroes everywhere on the hdd so all data you have on it will be gone for good but it *might* get rid of some bad sectors....
