Alright, I know everyone has heard of and maybe even been tracking the ads and disads of the new Fostex VF 16 vs 1680 vs 1880 vs DPS16 vs Korg D16 vs Godzilla vs Rodan!

OK, so here's a question, with all the hassle in making the VF 16 export data in a reasonably direct manner, and all the other stuff (like roland's tendency towards making you pay to be confused for 3 weeks), what do y'all have to say on the absolute most bang for the buck given all the necessary peripherals (CD burners, zips, jaz, editing programs, etcetera) and versatility (number of simultaneous (and balanced) ins and stuff), ease of use, simultaneous playback, uncompressed output) and of course quality (is there anything really horrible if it's digital?) and of course, of course, price tag!

And what's up on this new Yamaha coming out? Anyone know a MSRP including the burner?

I know everyone has there brand preferences and stuff, but there are folks (like me!) who just want to get going without a lot of after the initial purchase, hidden drawbacks/ extra gear necessities.

Any comments??!?

I'm drooling over the AW4416 too. It looks like it will really put the "studio" back in "portastudio". In March, the expected suggested retail price was $3799 with CDRW.

Hey!

Also, the Yamaha site make sreferences to "Yamaha recommended" CD-R drives and IDE Hard Disks. But I did not see a list. Does anyone know where it/they are?

the yamaha aw4416cdhd (the one with the burner) is selling for $3299 from musicians friend....looks like an incredible machine..it can record up to 16 tracks simultaneously if you buy the adapter(extra $$)...looks great but a bit out of my price range right now...i'll still need to get other basic gear to "get going"...i am leaning towards the AKAI DPS 16i for $1999...This comes from the spec sheet on Akai's site...

SIMULTANEOUS RECORDING
10 tracks (8 at 96kHz)

SIMULTANEOUS PLAYBACK
16 Tracks at 16-bit 32kHz, 44.1kHz and 48kHz (8 at 96kHz)
12 Tracks at 24-bit 32kHz, 44.1kHz and 48kHz (6 at 96kHz)

it also comes with a 10 gig hard drive and the cd burners that are "preferred" are all under $350....a big deal when you see the roland burner is around $600...i have been asking around and current AKAI users seem to be happy with the machine but they are not nearly as vocal as the VS users...still trying to make my final decision...but as of now the akai looks to be my choice...i'd love to hear any other opinions on this topic...appreciated

All I know about it is from the short video clip on Harmony Central, but in the bang for buck category the new Tascam 788 looks pretty interesting: 8 tracks no compression 24 bit SCSI out w/mixer MSRP $1149...
