Thank you all for your birthday wishes. It means a lot to know I have a lot of friends out there.
Today (Monday, May 26th) is actually my birthday. I turned 66 years old. In only 600 more years, I will officially qualify as the "Recording Engineer From Hell".
For my birthday weekend, my son Alex suggested we go out camping at Lake Texoma (to get me out of the house and away from the studio for a while).
It turned out to be the "camping trip from hell", and I wound up driving back to the house around 4 am, missing my shirt and socks, after the rain and wind drenched the inside of our tent. I'm renting a cabin next time.
On the plus side, an old bandmate sent me a recording of a live show we did in 1963 at the University Of Southern Louisiana, back when we were signed to RCA Victor. Damn, it was really funny to hear myself from 40 years ago. I was actually pretty funny back then, making up the intros to the songs as I went along. Kind of a cross between Dick Smothers, Tom Leher, and Jerry Lewis.
I never remembered anything I said, so each show was always different. I found out later that the other groups on the tour use to watch us from the wings, writing down the best stuff I came up with, for their own segments.
And I got a copy of our 1963 RCA single, which was never released. The "A" side was a song called "He Was My Brother", written by a then unknown singer/songwriter named Paul Simon. The "B" side featured me, singing a song I wrote, "River Come By My Door". Our producer was the legendary Al Schmitt.
And 40+ years later, I'm still in the music business - amazing.
It's been a wonderful 66 years; I'm really looking forward to the next 66 years.
Again, thank you all.
