New one -- getting there. Thanks in advance for any/all comments.

Best,

Compression has murdered the drum track on this one. Not much dynamic range here. Guitars sound good, but it's hard to judge much else with it being so squashed together.

Vocal as crisp as a cucumber Kev, which is what I like about your stuff.

I will attend, G. If you're hearing it, it's too much. Thanks for the note!

Thanks Tobe. This was a one off working vocal so that I could rough mix. Some of it I'll keep, but there are some slight timing issues in some of the phrasing that I've yet to fix.

I agree with what others have said, the drums especially are over compressed, also the hi-hat on the left sounds particularly harsh and too forward, it is fatiguing to listen to for long periods. The singing, and songwriting is very good though overall, I wouldn't bother with compression and limiting on the master fader though, leave it to a mastering engineer or get someone else to master it that you know can help you get a fresh perspective on your mix and how to improve it.

Agreed ... particularly on the hi hat. Normally I pull element that way back, yet there are rhythmic nuances to it that I liked in relation to the guitars, so I incorporated it more out front. This is still just a working mix ... as this piece is still in production. The reason I post early though is to solicit comments like yours and others so that when it does get to knuckle down time on the mixing aspect, I know what to pay closer attention to in advance.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I worked on lessening the compression, as well as tweaked the vocal parts (added more harmonies etc ...), brought more bass git forward -- and massaged the whole mix a bit further. New listen is on link above.

Best musicians I know have checked in on contributing. Happy day for this piece ... check back. It will get better. :)

Vocals seem a little pushed back. I think nudging them forward wouldn't hurt. I didn't hear anything obvious.

I thought so too, Dave ... but since I knew other folks were going to send parts that I'd have to mix around, I waited until I received the new parts before I mixed them all together. The new parts have been added, the song is now out of the production and arrangement stage, and I just made the first pass a final mix.

What do folks think about how it finally turned out? Thanks again for any/all comments ...

Seems like everytime you have something new I am listening on earbuds. Will have to take the time to listen on the monitors. But, sounds real good, man. Nothing jumps out at me. Nice work!

Shut the whole mix down, except for the vocal, at 1.54. Just for a second or so.

I reference check ear buds when mixing, SH ... so I appreciate your comment as being in agreement to what I was hearing through them too.

Right at "It happens every time" -- so that the vocal stands alone? That would be dramatic ... Interesting thought P!

There's a bit of a Smithereens feel to this.
1st post version
It does sound like too many guitars in guitary bit - as if one of them isn't quite in time.
The solo doesn't bite through the mix.
It's good stuff Kevin!
2nd page version
That guitary bit takes the song from Smithereens to prog - it sounds like it has a bundle of early synths in with that lovely guitar.
Nice finishing chord!

Thanks Ray! The guitarist is reworking the hook section ... he thinks it's not varied enough ... which it isn't -- because it's been copied and pasted from the small bit he initially sent. :)

Good point on the solo -- I suspected I'd not made it cut through clearly ... but the tonality makes it tough. I'll attend.

I thought I was closing in, and I think I'm wandering the right neighborhood, but I'm now hesitating to remix until I get the new git parts.

New Mix up top ... comments from others sent me back to the console to add more kick and bass clarity ... and reduce some phasing effects.

The guitar that's playing from about 2.15 seems to come off the tracks at bit around 2.25.
