The layout of my home studio makes it advantageous for me to hang my vocal mike from the ceiling via its cord (temporarily while recording). What are the caveats for doing this, or should it not be done at all? FWIW, I am using an AT3035 with a pop shield....

Thanks in advance, Mark

I think hanging a mic by its cable is asking for trouble, if not now, then shortly down the road. Mic cables seem to be much more fragile than they look, even under the best of conditions, and adding the weight of the mic would just make it more likely to have cable, and maybe connector problems.

If you're adamant on hanging it, there is a link to a picture of a "hanger", and some other ideas in this thread:

Those clips and swivels look like the kind you can get for fishing at your local sports department. I'd think a few of these with some fishing line would make an easy DIY project. Looks like they're meant to clip to a shock mount, and be hung from a boom. You could just attach them to hooks screwed into the ceiling. (Or maybe just use a mic stand from the get-go?)

How were you planning to hold the pop screen?

that doesnt sound like a great idea. do you have a 2 by 4 and some duct tape instead

Thanks for the links and the info. I tried it out last night, and while it is workable, it can certainly be improved. I didn't experience any problems with the mike swaying or moving, but it did pick up alot more noise from floor level than I expected (because the top of the mic is pointed at the floor).

If I try it again I'll probably try to make a dedicated hanger -- probably more substantial than fishing line.

Thanks again, Mark
