what is the best way to hang the foam on the ceiling so it doesn't rip the foam when I have to remove it. One guy said to cut out thin panel from the hardware store and glue it to that, then liquid nail that to the ceiling. Sound good? Any other ideas?

Their foamtac product does a really good job of holding up their foam. It takes a little bit to completely dry, probably a full day or two so you may need to prop it up with something. But once it's dry it's there to stay.

One thing I thought of a while ago would be to use velcro. You could put little squares of velcro all around the walls/ceiling, and then you can easily move foam around as you need, without having to rip glue off.

You do know that once you liquid nail that thin panel to the ceiling it's not coming off, right?

I have some adhesive from Auralex that is NOT permanent. It does not destroy the foam when you remove the foam.

Sweetwater carries it.

I'd use the pins. Liquid nails is permanant and the spray doesn't work for shit.

I can share what I did, although I used GIK panels so it will be a little different. You would need to attach your foam to some kind of lightweight panel attached to a wood frame. What I did was crawl up in my attic, drill the tiniest holes I could down through the ceiling, anchor some fishing line to the rafters, send the line down through the holes in the ceiling, and attach that to my panels. Only leaves little tiny holes in your ceiling that can be easily covered up later if desired.

I totally beg to differ. It appears at first as though it's not going to hold the foam in place, but if you try taking it off in a year you'll find that it's definitely held up very firmly.

Spray works fine for me. Never had any issues at all.

But the thing is, if I use the spray (Auralex?), if I remove the foam, it's going to rip? I don't want to spend a day sandpapering the stuff off the walla and ceilings when I move out. Might go the pin way if this is so.

As I said above, there is an auralex spray that works really well, but ISN'T permanent.

This is the stuff. I've used it, it works as advertised.

Dont :D foam sucks. Make a broadband absorber cloud -muuuuch better.

Enough with the "foam sucks" mantra.

Auralex foam sucks? first I heard of that....

I have a few bass traps too, but haven't decided where to put them. My guess is behind the monitors in those corners.

Ok, guess I was harsh. auralex are not worhtless. The Lenrds are ok to a point. The regular studio foam could be used for side wall reflection taming and general HF slap tamer. But thats about it.
You will have those issues, but in small rooms the low end is harder to deal with. Foam just deals with the HF range, so in a sense it excentuates the low end problem. What happens is that you have no high end and the low end mud being immediate. It might work for vox and maybe a amp room, butfor tracking and mixing, you'll just be fooling yourself.
You have to get the whole spectrum balanced for any decent usage.
Use pins and/or small finishing nails for the ceiling, put bass traps in the corners to start.

Good luck

His question here was NOT "should I use foam", it was how to hang it. No one claimed that it replaces bass traps. I use foam and 703 and bass traps and the all have their place.

So, unless you have something to add about the mechanics of hanging foam......

FH, chill bro.
I did have something to say about how to hang foam. I actually have foam myself (Auralex). I personally like using finishing nails-hows that ?
Just wanted to let Phosophene know foam is not the end all.(in case he didn't know). That is all.
:D

Well, it fell off after 20 minutes so I never got to find out.

lol, user error :)
Mine's been up for over a year, no issues, so I don't know what the problem is at your end.

Undoubtedly the problem is me, since following the directions on 3M's packaging is apparently insufficient. It's likely that gravity is higher where I live.
