Any help I like condensers on vocals but don't want to pay an arm and
a leg. Just want a strong pickup on vocals.
Thanks

for about $100 you can get a v67 which a lot of people like for vocals.

Since you said "handheld", another option is to try various neodymium offerings (like a used Shure Beta 57 or 58). They're hotter than a SM57, and handle faster transients like a condenser.

I've used one of those hand held Sony ($30 or cheaper)mini-cassette recorders before I bought some "real" condensers. I just used the earphone out into a pre, kept it in the record position, and had to e.q. some of the buzz out. It worked for what I needed to do. (I'm into lo-fi stuff)

I have a friend who uses one of these solelly for ALL of his vocals on all of his albums and they all sound great. It's a decent makeshift condenser option.........if you're down with that kinda thing. ;)
