Hi guys,

I am new to recording and I am planning to start making an album with my friends. We have Neumann KMS 104 which I love for stage use. We also have a couple of SM58 and BETA 87. I've research on the internet about my question but couldn't find any answer which I think sufficient. My question is, what is the disadvantages using handheld microphone to using "proper" large diaphragm microphone? Everytime I am in a studio, the mic used for recording vocal is always the large diaphragm. I've looked at the difference between large and small diaphragm in the FAQ section. It just say that large diaphragm for color and size. What do you mean by color and size?

I am considering buying a KSM44 or AKG C414 for the project, but if they will not make any difference with my KMS104, then I will probably use the money for something else. The problem is I can't try microphones here before buying.

Please enlighten me

Thanks

Mics are like wives, one size does not fit all. What works for you might not work for me. Use what you have til you can hear something you want to change (i.e. better definition, more highs or lows, better whatever)
Also,, what are you going to use the recording for?
You should be able to get a good, usable sound from what you have. That being said, the mics you have selected for purchase are outstanding and if you can get them from here or gearslutz used, they retain their value pretty well.

The problem is I have no experience with C414 or KSM44. I know them from the review of people here and gearslutz. I think my Neumann KMS104 is great, at least for stage use. But since I haven't experienced a mic which is more expensive than KMS104, I will think it is the best. When I only have beta87, I think it is already crystal clear, until I tried KMS104. Now as I said I don't have the opportunity to try C414 or KSM44, so I don't know whether spending that much money will make a huge difference to my KMS104.

We are recording pop/rock music and will be sold in our home country.
