I have someone who wants me to record her hammered dulcimer. I think she will also want to sing with it. How in the heck would you record this thing:

1. By itself?
2. What if she wants to sing and play at the same time?

I have a C-1, sm57, AKG D 1000E, sure beta 87A

Thanks,
Larrye

I recorded one just last week.

They're kind of a pain, in that they really need to be mic'ed from a distance - I used a wide stereo pair of earthworks QTC's about 3 feet above and perpendicular to the angle of the top of the instrument.

Most hammered dulcimer players need to have an unobstructed view of their instrument while playing. This more or less precludes throwing up a close voacal mic too. And you could try to get the voice with the stereo pair that is getting the dulcimer, but it sounds like this is a good opportunity to try your persuasive powers and encourage them to do the vocals as overdubs.

Littledog,

Thanks for your reply! Since I don't have a stereo pair, I will try to mic it with my C-1, but in the manner you suggested.

Thanks again,
Larrye
