Nice confessional rendition but the hi hat or ride (can't tell whch) has an odd sound, is too loud & is oddly placed in the mix.

ah the cymbals! theyre the ones that came with my pearl targets, that was actually the best i could get it...dya think it should come down in the mix? Whattya think of the vocals?

What Ray said....other than that I liked it!!!

It sounds pretty confined. Pretty vocal heavy. The drums sound fake to me. The acoustic is pretty dull. Drums are pretty buried, but I suppose in this song they probably should be that way.

Anyway, it is a nice song, just needs a bit of work. :)

Cheers, few questions though...confined sonically, or melodically?

Drums are heavily processed, because i cant d em in a 'live' take so there alot of messy editing.

Acoustic dull, again sonically or in terms of arrangement?

Cheers dude.

I hope you didn't take what I said to be a slam on your song. I just try to point out what I feel could be improved - that's kinda the point of the clinic. I liked the song itself, my comments were geared at the mixing end of things.

The mix seems kinda flat (no depth), and kinda squished. This kind of song has an intimate feel to it, so I wouldn't make it real wide, or go crazy with the depth, but IMHO it definetly needs some more "space" to it.

The ac guitar isn't bad, but maby just a little bit more top end? On my system it sounds a little dull is all.

The drums I did not like at all, but it sounds like you only have so much to work with, so maybe they are fine. Also, they are not as integral to the song as the guitar and vox, so it's not like they are ruining the mix or anything.

Hope that helps, and once again, I did really like the song. :)

No no its cool, i found what you said REALLY helpful! I saw you checked out another post I had about mastering, and the first thing I said in that was that my mixes seem kinda flat, so we're definetely in agreement! There does need to be more space...are we talking panning or reverbs or what? And yeah, i tried EQing more top end from my Martin D 15 which is rather naturally boomy. honestly man, ill listen to anything and everyhting you have to say. Also, my loser friend who sings the song is bugging me about his vocals...performace wise, what do you guys think?

As far as the vocals are concerned...I think they were done with a lot of heart and feeling.....could use a bit more control but, that will come in time...just my 2 cents worth.

Yes, mostly panning and reverb. Other things can help with the space as well. Somewheer in the last few days, Ford Van posted a great little tutorial on reverb, try and do a search to find it, I think you will atleast learn a thing or two from it.

You should be able to massage the sound out of the tracks you have, but what I have found is mic placement makes a HUGE difference in the sound of an ac guitar. Did you mic it at the twelth fret and at the bridge? Sometimes if I don't won't a lot of boominess on an acoustic, and it will be the main instrument in a song, I like to do an x/y at the twelth fret. You get a pretty sparkly sound - it's not right for every song, but you definetly won't get any boominess.

Your ac guitar track was just a TINY bit dull to me. Not that big of a deal. And heck, that's just my opinion - what the heck do I know.........

well i used a dynamic mic for the acoustic (dont hate me).

ahhhh, that may be what I am hearing. They don't tend to do really well with the top end on ac guitar - you can't boost what didn't make it to tape. :)

Yeah, in hindsight it was a bad move...but they dont pick up much of the room, which in my case is a great thing, its not treated, wooden floors, 15 high glass ceilings...horrible if ya cant control ambience. But ill try the mic techniques ya suggested.

I dunno, but that sounds like a great room for recording ac guitar. Is it pretty big? Wood floors and high cielings are GREAT.

What really ? I heard they were bad because the sound bounces everywhere (which it does). I always thought one or the other was preferable, not both...its about 30 x 20 feet.

Most people would LOVE to record in a big ass room like that! 20x30x15! Give it a try. That will give you a ton of "space" right there. :)

Great, I will....now I can only do two tracks at once (hence the crappy drums), so in terms of a band recording thats not doable...would you still suggest recording in the middle of the room, for say the acoustic? Thanks for this, you've changed my perspective on things completely.
