Hi all,

I'm interested in buying the AKG C2000B , just for
the starting...

I got some good recommendations on this one ,
however, the salesman had another suggestion:

Fame SKEC010/SKEC002

now the price difference is realy negligible

But I don't want do my first mistake at my first step
in Home Recording....

Please help

Have you heard of Fame? I've heard of AKG. Stick with the winner, especially if the price difference is negligible. Or buy a Studio Projects C1.

Yikes!!!!

I gotta agree wholeheartedly with Charger!! I've never heard of Fame and at least if you don't like the AKG it has a name and can probably be sold for about what you pay for it. Man....don't sell yourself short...you will kick your own ass later!

Hondo (remember them? are they still around?) used to have a product line named Fame. Budget Hondo? how cheap can you get? but I don't know if the mic comes from them or what but that's my dos centavos...

Hondo was owned and distributed by IMC in Fort Worth during the 80s. The Hono line was actually made by Samick, as I remember. IMC was also the American importer and distributor for British Fame loudspeakers, British Studiomaster boards and amplifiers, and Akai Pro products.

IMC also owned and distributed Ross amps, Charvel, Jackson, Black Diamond strings, and tuning pegs. They were bought by Akai a few years ago who sold off or closed down most of the other product lines.

I was Rhythm Band QC Supervisor at the time (still am...) and got a boatload of prototypes and misc stock when Akaii bought IMC from Tommy Moore and made the move out to Alliance airport.I mentioned your name Harvey to Bob and Laura Bergin and they remember you.You probably knew James Pennebaker,Todd Taliaferro and Charles Perrino from that era as well.
The Hondo stock was long gone by 95,but there was plenty Charvels,Jacksons and gear from the Ross electronics lab for me to buy cheap.
Was it Hondo making that Chicita little guitar that Billy Gibbons occasionally played?I believe Dan Earlywine's brother sells them currently.
Tom

Yup, I remember them all. I think the Chaquita, the machinegun Hondo, and the headless bass were all made by Earliwine? or designed by him and made by Hondo. As director of electronics for IMC, I designed the Charvel, Ross and Jackson amps and speakers and designed the Ross Hurricane speakers (I still love that double 18" cabinet I did - that was a good PA system). And of course, "The Mic" which we never produced.

Thanks but what about the AKG C3000B

Thanks guys...I guess you'er all right !

But , what about the AKG C3000B ?

I've heard it's not that bad .....

I've got a C3000. Great mic, variable patterns, high SPL, well-built. Sounds great on ac. guitar and vocals. Get a decent pre for it and you won't be disapointed with it.

Bob

AKG C3000B!

Thanks Bob,

I'm gonna get it ? (I found for ~260$)

Tell me , do I need some accessories (special stand , pop filter...)

how much these things cost?

It's not a heavy mic, so any decent mic stand will do. A boom is a must for positioning. You should also buy (Popperstopper) or make (embroydery ring & nylon stockings) a pop filter.

"however, the salesman had another suggestion:"

NEVER rely on a salesman's recommendation unless you know he's an expert. Most of these guys were working in Radio Shack last year! You can use this board to get recommendations on all kinds of gear, and the folks here won't steer you wrong.
Good luck!

Bob

Well Bob,

I guess I'll stick with the expert ....

Thanks again,
Oren

PLEASE!!!!!! I am certainly NO EXPERT! My experience with salesmen is from being taken by them. I was referring to all the pros on this site. I am just a mere grasshopper. And you should be glad you found the C3000 for $260 - I paid much more (before AKG lowered their prices!

Bob

We're talking about the C3000B, not the C2000B. There are many differences (freq response, variable patterns, etc.) I agree the C1 is a fantastic mic- I suggest that he buy BOTH!

Bob

Hey......

Guys, hold your horses....

Now I'm realy confused!

Which of the above I should get !? (C1 or C3000B)

I think the C1 is more expensive than the C3000B?

Are the differences so significant???

Well, I have Zekeman's AKG C3000B here, but I sent all the Studio Projects mics to Stephen Paul, so either he has ,or Alan Hyatt has them. I can't really compare them without having them side by side, or listening to them with only a brief interruption between hearing both.

Dear Mr.Gerst ,

In general ,(without comparing to the Studio Projects C1)

would you say that AKG C3000B is a good bargain...?

Is it fit for vocal ,flute ,accustics use ?

Time permitting, we're gonna be cutting some acoustic guitar tracks today, so I'll be trying the Behringer ECM8000 against the Audix TR-40, and the Oktava MC012, and the Marshall 603S. If I have some extra time, I'll check out the C3000B. I also plan to try the new $49 Radio Shack drum mic against the Sennheiser 504D, the mic they copied.
