Good song. Reminds me of The Cure (which is a good thing ;) ).

The sound is very muffled - possibly a wrong setting on the noise reduction on the cassette player?

The drums and vocal suffer particularly from a lack of sparkle.

The tambourine sounds much brighter than the rest - was it recorded differently or at a different time?

Singing is fine most of the time, but there are a few wee moments where the pitching could be better, and the backing vocals would be worth re-doing near the end.

I agree with someone else that the guitar riff is good but overused. This song would benefit from more "light and shade" - a bit more variety in arrangement/instrumentation as it develops.

I like the solo. :)

It would be well worth re-tracking this on your current equipment because it's a good song, and would really benefit from a mix with more clarity.

Hope this helps.

I liked it, definitely here the cure in there.

I found it a bit repetitive, the song would really benefit from a bridge or even move up a key somewhere in there. I won't comment on the mix because it's been covered.

Well, the drums probably lack sparkle because they were provided by an old Yamaha RX21 drum machine, and quite probably there's not a lot of high end in the samples used. As for the vocals, I used a dynamic rather than a condenser. Again, not a lot of sparkle there. Of course, I might just need to degauss my heads ;)

Ah, but you say the tambourine does sound bright; and that was tracked with the same mic as the vocals (and everything else that was miked up). So it probably is just the drum machine. I have more mics now: although they're all dynamics (apart from a pair of ECM8000s), so I might try retracking the lead vocal with one of them.

Erm. The backing vocals... I'm only half guilty on that count. I had a friend help me out (just so it wouldn't sound so much like a one man band kind of gig). Any out of tune bits are him. Honest :D

The lead riff. Well, I like it. And it does change for the chorus.

Glad you liked the solo. Can you guess which compressor I used when tracking it (note: that was the only time prior to mastering that I used any compression)?

Oh, and it was tracked on my current equipment ( ). I think it'd benefit from some decent real drums. But there's not a chance in Hell I'll ever find anyone to help with that. Or a decent bass player, or maybe some violin even.

Anyway, I'm glad you liked it

Oh, and as for the muffled sound. I have a horrible feeling I might have submitted the wrong version to nowhere.

Okay. Just so you know., I've uploaded a bigger version to the nowhereradio site. Oh, and Waldo, I'm currently downloading it back to my PC to check that it sounds better than the previous one.

The higher bit rate version is a bit clearer. Also, the song is growing on me. :)

I'd recommend compressing the main vocal quite a bit, and have it a bit louder in the mix.

I'd move the "strummed" guitar out to the right hand side quite a lot, and cut the lows/mids (try 3-6 dB cut below 500Hz for starters). This should help separate the guitar from the vocal.

And definitely get some new drum sounds! :)

It would be useful if you could post a gear list so we know what options you have.

Cheers

Wow, great song but I couldn't understand a word of the singing. Vocals need to cut a little more through the mix to start with.

All kinds of great little parts and very well thought out. The drums sounded good, but had an obvious canned sound to them. Same with the guitars and direct in, it all kind of holds the tune back. But definatley review the vocal tracks.

Hey Ali and Doug

Oh, the drums are definitely canned alright ;) But, as for the "Direct In", it's strange you should hear that as everything (apart from the drums) was miked. With regards to the vocals, I can kind of see what you're getting at. Any suggestions? Maybe a different mic (condenser instead of dynamic, or even just a different dynamic (I now have a MD421-U5)?), or some EQ tweaks. Based on what you hear, got any suggestions on a good vocal mic for my voice?

As for the equipment used well, it was all recorded on a Tascam 388. The drums are from a Yamaha RX21, the guitars are a Hondo (yes, I know) LP copy and a Tanglewood Strat-U-Like; both played through a Vox Pathfinder 15 Watt Solid State combo, the bass is a Hondo II ; also played through the Vox. Everything (except the drums, natch) was recorded with an AKG D321 (a dynamic vocal mic of the 58 type). I also had ( and still have) a Zoom 1201 multi-effects unit, a really old non tape analogue echo (mono only) and a compressor.

Since I recorded it I've added the MD421-U5, a Beyer M201 and M99 and a pair of ECM8000s. Currently waiting on an EV 635A and an ATM25.
