guitarport and levels

I am just getting into this recording thing with zero experience. here's the problem: I am trying to use n-track to record with my guitarport but there is minimal volume on the playback and input level.
I have a windows 98se 128mb ram with a montego turtle bay II soundcard.
I have tried plugging the guitarport into the mic input but get very little input/output on the vu meter, same result with line input selection.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS please use little words/terms as I have a very small brain when it comes to this kind of thing.

I figured out what the problem was and wanted to post it in case some other poor SOB runs into the same situation. The output of the sound card has to run into the input of the GP and Gp has to be listed as the primary soundcard and recording source. The only catch is when you want to use the microphone, ( the one that comes with the computer I don't know about real ones because I don't have one yet), you have to switch back to the soundcard as the recording source.

i was thinking f buying Guitarport to use with N Tracks,,
but i dont know if its as simple as plugging in and recording guitars with it?
whats the word then?
