Given the fact that there are so many methods around, what would you like from a method?. You could take this question from the point of view of a teacher or a player. You do not have to stick to print, as many of us use video's and DVD's for teaching purposes. Try to think of something you miss in this field, or something which is not done all that often.

Here is what I encourage in my students: I work with them on "traditional" skills such as fretboardknowledge, chordshapes and voicings, dexterity of hands and fingers[which is probably the biggest one in the fist stages]. Right from day one I will emphasis that there are no "rights" and "wrongs" in playing and in music, there are only "more efficient ways of doing things" and its is all about finding your own voice musically and on the guitar.

So all of this is used to open up the creative juices of the student. I encourage them to make up their own exercises, chordsequences, riffs and melodies. If someone experiences how it works for them, how they can get themselves engaged in music, they are more likely to study harder and find their own solutions to particular problems.

When making up your own material you bypass the "I can't play this" because the mind and fingers will only go to what is already known. From here a more interesting way of playing that particular idea can be developed.

So an "ideal" Method could have a lot of ideas about building and developing creative skills on the guitar[ and in music] And this is only the beginning.....haven't even touched upon:

# creative use of effects

# building your own loops of various effects

# making sounds on the guitar WITHOUT use of external effects

The lists is too long, and I only put these ideas here to get you going, so what would your method look like? You could also read this as "What is so often overlooked in learning to play the gtr." or "How to overcome sounding too much like anybody else"

I know it may cover a HUGE area, but this is the PLACE where we can discuss these things....................so let us get going..............

Eddie :)
