How can I get a value on a guitar?

Or can someone give me a value on a 1968(I think) Gibson Melody Maker w/ 2 Pickups ?

Ive had it valued before around $1100 but not by anyone who had any idea what they were talking about. I also know that the 2 pickups are very rare... the only other Guitars like it that I have seen were single. My father and I have both scoured the internet searching for another guitar like it and we have been unsuccessful in finding even one with the double pickups.

I can provide pics if needed.

The best realistic way is to look at Ebay and check the completed listings for similar items. But if you can't find them there, you have to check out vintage dealers. Pick up a copy of Vintage Guitar magazine and give it a look. You will probably see others for sale in it, or reputable dealers who really know their stuff.

One big mistake alot of people make is taking guitars to random guitar shops near them who rarely know anything about vintage guitars, though they TELL you they know everything about them. There are only maybe 4-5 places nation wide I would actually trust their judgement on guitar values.

Ok I did a quick search for you on Ebay, since I'm noto doing anything yet today. I found several mid 60's Melody Makers in various conditions. And a few 2 pickup models. Some people are asking up to $1000-$1200 for them but they are not SELLING at that price. That's why I say look at completed auctions to see what they are actually selling at. There are several attempts at selling 2 pickup models, but it looks like the 1 pickup models are selling better, perhaps cause they're going for half of what people are *attempting* to get for most of the 2 pickup models.

Some of the actual selling proces I see are $415 ('65 refin 2pu), $413 ('65 burst, 1pu), $560 ('65 cherry 1 pu), $536 ('63 burst 1pu), $432 ('68 SG style with humbuckers refit), $425 (late 60's 2 pu SG style).

Maybe that helps some.
