So my wife and I were wondering what kind of vacation to take this year, and I tossed out the idea of a guitar vacation - a week or two of road trips that would stop at some of the coolest guitar related places.
Where would you go? Some places that came to mind: I'd love to visit the Don Grosh shop or Fender factory in CA, Hard rock Cafe never hurts, the EMP here is Seattle is good, Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans maybe.
Give me your itenerary, but keep in mind that it has to be logistically feasible - I can't take a trip to Spain and CA.

The Rock and Roll hall of fame in Cleveland is pretty cool, although its not really that big.

I've heard Kansas City has a really good blues/jazz festival.

Personally Id go on a quest for Nigel Tufnels collection from Spinal Tap ("Look, it still has the tagger...No, don't touch it...No, Don't even look at it...").

I don't know if they still have this - but a few years ago you could go to rock & roll camp.

It was hosted by several 60's & 70's artists (I beleive it was an off-shoot of Ring's All Star Review) and in any given week you may be jamming with Ringo or any of a dozen "stars" (non of whose names come to me at the moment) If I remember correctly, I think it cost something like $3,000 for the week.

It was realy designed more for the "I used to be in a band middle aged wanna be" - but it actually sounded like fun.

Now I'm not convinced I would go, simply because I'm still gigging every week - so I don't need to pay $3,000 for a weeks worth of jam sessions.

But, man I can't help but think it would be very cool to be in the middle of a song and look over at Ringo on the drums.

By the way, the way I learned about this is my wife read about it and sent for the literature - she was gonna send me to the camp as a gift. I told her I'd rather spend the money on gear!!!

55 Bar

If you're into fusion guitar, Mike Stern and Wayne Krantz -- among others (Leni Stern included) -- still play pretty regularly at the 55 Bar in NYC: www.55bar.com

For the vintage guitar thing, you've got to go to Mandolin Bros in Staten Island. The store is in a converted house and they have many (probably hundreds) of great guitars. On my first trip there the owner (Stan Jay) told me I could play anything I wanted and to have fun.

I turned around and almost fell over a $30,000 D'Aquisto that was on a stand. It is truly a mecca and a great way to spend the day.
