Guitar Tuners - Headstock or Plug-in

Been using the clop on style for a while now. It's worked in just about every situation I've needed it to. My ears do most of the tuning in any case but when it works fine for live work and in noisy environments just fine..
 
Depending on where your jack is located, that jack one looks like it would be a real pain in the arse. If your plug is near your endpin I can't see that being very easy to read. I'd go for the clip on version if it's between those two.

I personally prefer the pedal type which mutes the signal while tuning (so the audience doesn't need to hear the tuning song). The korg pitchblack is nice and cheap, true bypass and has some funky strobe modes (although it's probably not true strobing). But I play electric guitar (or bass) and use a pedal board so it's not extra baggage per se.
 
Thanks guys. Yup, it would be used mostly on a Martin with the jack on the end pin. Maybe I'll try it out at GC before buying it from Sweetwater. :rolleyes:

Chili, do you do a lot of mid-set retuning, or is this going to be almost entirely used for tuning before you hit stage or for studio work?

If the former, I can't personally speak for a clip on, but I see the appeal.

The later, on the cheap I've always been REALLY impressed by the Korg tuners:

I've used both of these tuners predicessors for years (CA-30 and, um, I think GA-20), and they're easily the most accurate I've personally played in their price bracket (sub-$20 for the CA, sub-$15 for the GA). A year or two back I upgraded to a Peterson VSAM, and that's what I use around the house these days, but even then I keep a Korg in my guitar cases, and will often use the Korg while first tuning back up to pitch while doing setup work, get it ballpark, and then switch to the VSAM, simply because it's more user-friendly.
 
Thanks for the suggestions, Drew. Either of those will work very well with a 3' patch cord, I would think. Is that what you do?

Yeah, I just want something portable to throw in the guitar case. Tune up once before playing. I've got a real old Banana tuner (are they still around??) but it only does EADGBE and sometimes I do alternate tunings.

Seriously, all you need is one of the cheap clip on tuners. You can pick then up for not much more than a set of strings these days. Give one a try.;)
