guitar to MIDI

I know it's possible with various hardware and some older software (I saw some on Harmony Central). I'm looking to see what the latest and greatest is and I'm also looking to see if there are any free alternatives available. Any help?

There is hardware out there (Roland GT-3) and older actual midi guitars. Never really heard of software for this though.

You can find a Roland GK-2 MIDI hex pickup for pretty cheap on ebay, use that to go to a Roland GR series synth. That's what I do and couldn't be happier.

Melodyne will convert audio tracks into MIDI data, and does a very good job at it.
