Hi guys

Yesterday I`ve playd around with the virtual version of the korg ms20 and tried to run a guitar through it to trigger the oscilators. to my amazment it also tracked the pitch of the guitar rather nicely! it sounded awsome. so i actualy played the synth with a guitar. my question is, first of all, do any of you know of a good audio to midi software that works in realtime? prefebly one that works in cubase (vst). anyway, that experience really turned me on to doing the same thing with a hardware synth. now, the only one i have that has external inputs is the dsi evolver, but the inputs arn`t cv inputs. what i was thinking about is some kind of cv/pitch to midi convertor. does electric guitar output cv? so i can use a cv to midi coverter? i don`t want to invest in a guitar synth thingy. what would you reccomend as a cheap option? if a software synth can do it it can`t be that difficult right?

If, as you say, your guitar sounds awesome triggering the oscillators from the virtual MS-20 why would you want a midi version of your performance? It would make more sense that you'd want to record the audio coming thru the MS-20.

Those inputs give access to the effects (and in some patches the filter section) of the Evolver, but not to the oscillators.

No. Electric guitars do not output control voltage signals. The fact that you can plug your guitar into the virtual MS-20 is one of the ways that Korg has found to improve the design of the new over the old.

In my opinion you should be exploring what your new hookup can do for your music and not letting your imagination run wild. Sorry to burst your bubble, but true interconectivity of all instruments in a musicians arsenal is not a reality --- yet.

???

That's a rather odd thing to say. By that logic, why would you ever want to record MIDI data at all? What's the difference between recording MIDI data from a keyboard or a bunch of pads or a guitar? Once it's MIDI data, it's MIDI data, with all the advnatages and usefullness MIDI data has always had.

Well, on the evolver you can make an envelope from an externel sound source so it will track somewhat like a crude vocoder, thats probably what your MS20 thing is doing

AFAIK, there is no software that will track pitch to midi in realtime. If you want guitar sounds from a synth, look for a guitar midi controller. A guitar is fairly complex instrument sonically, my Yamaha controller has sensors on each string for pitch, sustain, bend, and mute but you can play any synth just like a guitar

It's not an odd thing to say at all.

A midi track wouldn't trigger the MS-20 in the same way as patching a guitar straight into it because guitars are not midi instruments.

If you read the original question carefully he's asking about using the MS-20 in the role of an effects box for his guitar, and that's the angle from which I responded.

You should know by now that if there had been some arcane midi data manipulation that could have solved the problem I wouldn't have hesitated to tackle an explanation of it! ;)

Sorry, I didn't get that he was using it as an effects device... since he said it was tracking the pitch, I got stuck on that...

Wait so how exactly did you go about this? Sorry i cant help, but I dont really understand what you did.

thanks for all your thoughts guys, but i think i need to clarify:

ssscientist: 1) i do not want a midi version of the performance, i want some pitch to midi device or software that i could use to play my evolver with the guitar, which brings me to 2) on the evolver you can use peak amount or an envelope follower to trigger the oscillators volume, but not osc pitch, anyway i want to trigger the synth with midi coming from the guitar into the midi in on the evolver.
3) i don`t want to use the evolver or any synth for that matter as an effect box, but rather to play it with the guitar as a controller. as the evolver doesn`t have cv inputs, the only way i can think of doing this is pitch to midi.

marshall409: i just plugged a guitar in to my mixer, and sent that chanell into my audio interface. next i opened an audio track in cubase which recieves the guitar signal and put the ms20fx as an insert on that track.

now, if the virtual ms20 can do it rather well (track the pitch in real time), there has to be some easy and cheap way of doing this with the evolver, thats why i`m here

That plug (not the usb) is a Roland GK pickup for a roland GR-20 (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Effects?sku=150097)

I've used these before, theyre pretty cool, it has a wierd delay, and the more complex the midi track is longer the delay is. Also the sensitivity isnt that great, so it will not pick up softer notes, or very fast note (due to slow attack)

One really cool thing about the GR-20 is that you can set each string to be a different instrument.

Im not sure if this will do what he wants (doesnt look like it) but its still a cool toy.

PS
Ther eis a GK pickup for bass, but because of the low frequency the attack time is delayed even more... just an fyi :)

In FL?

any idea on how to do this in FL studio? I have the guitar coming in on one track.....not entirely sure how to control a synth with it though  . any help ?thanks alot

Have you taken into consideration the fact that the evolver is monophonic?

Just leave me out of this one from now on.

I was on the 'he doesn't want a midi version of his performance' side of this thing in the first place. Read my reply carefully.

And let's be clear on this:

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE WHAT YOU ARE DESCRIBING IN THE PRICE RANGE OF THE HOME RECORDIST! NO PITCH TO MIDI CONVERTER AND NO OTHER MAGIC BOX THAT WILL TURN YOUR MONO EVOLVER INTO A POLYPHONIC GUITAR TRACKING THINGY.

The closest you are going to come is one of the Roland guitar synthesizers or maybe a Casio DG - series guitar --- if you can find one. They've been out of production for a long time.

And you ARE using the MS-20 as an effects box whether you know it or not. Anything you plug the guitar into that changes it's sound is considered an effect, so maybe the term 'effects keyboard' would better suit how you are using it.

ssscientist, i`m not using it as an effect box, and it`s not changing the guitars sound, the guitar signal is triggering the oscillators on the ms20 via cv (in software), so what`s being played is the ms20, not anything through it.

and yes, i realize the evolver is mono, i just want it for simple synth basslines
