Guitar Tacks Pro & Digital Noise?

Here is my situation:

I am running an AMD Muron 800 mhz processor w/ 512 meg RAM and an M-Audio 1010 LT card. I am using a Behringer 10 channel mixer w/ an 8 out bus. I am using (6) of the (8) outs for drums and the other (2) outs for scratch guitar tracks.

Everytime we go to record a full 4:00 min song with all (8) tracks we get little spots of digital noise. It only effects certain tracks. Usually the Kick Drum or Guitar Track. It even speeds up the song in some areas. The levels are not even close to clipping. I've tried changing the buffer and cache settings as well.

Has this ever happened to anyone on here? Could I be pushing the processor to hard? Should I upgrade to 1 gig RAM ?

When we record (4) or less tracks there is no noise or speeding up in areas.

Any suggestions?

I think you need to keep your eyes on two substantial area here. First, the CPU power, and second the HD speed. I highly suspect you need better processor for doing 8 track simultaneous, specialy if you record with higher bitrate and samplerate (eg. 24/96)... My 866MHz machine runs well for 16/44, but I think 24/96 needs more CPU power to process. HD Speed also has something to do with the number of the tracks. Make sure your Audio disk is at least 7200 RPM.

Hope it helps,

Processor Speed

We are running 24/96. I just installed a second western digital 7200 rmp hard drive. So it must be just a mater of the processor speed. I was going to look into getting a new chip set anyway. I guess now is a good time.

Thanks

The second HD will help a bit, but you might want to consider going to 24/44.1 - at least until you upgrade your processor.

There's been a million debates on this site regarding 96 KHz sample rate vs 44.1, so I won't jump into that pit. However, 44.1 without aritifacts has to be better than 96 with artifacts. No? :D

That's a Duron processor, right?

A 800 MHz Duron won't last long when you're recording in 24/96.

I have a AMD Athlon 1.6 GHz and can record 8 tracks simulatiniously for as long as I want (I know, I've tried :D).

Duron

Yes it is a Duron. I realise its a celeron equivalent. Not the greatest prossesor for recording for sure. I'm looking to see if the board will take an Athlon chip. If not I guess its upgrade city for me. However I will try 24/44.1 until I can upgrade. Thanks for all the help.

Hey Moskus

I just have a couple of questions on your set-up. What OS are you using? What is your buffer and cache set to? What if any other mods have you done to make the program run smoothe?

I am going to pick up a 1.4 ghz card and chip, and I want to optimize my settings.

Thanks
