Every time I record my electric guitar on cool edit pro I have trouble getting a "clear" sound. My guitar continually sounds like its 8 miles away from the mic and I keep getting an awful hiss. I know it's not the mic (SM57)..I've tried the compression and hiss reduction after recording but it still sounds too much like a "basement" recording. Any suggestions?

Well, it's not Cool Edit - it just organizes the sound that's coming through it. If the 57's okay (have you checked by substituting another mic for the 57?), then it might be either:

1) super crappy cables

2) super crappy pre or mixer (what are you putting the 57 through?)

3) super crappy soundcard (which one are you using?)

4) mic placement

What do you think?

Hi Dan...

Are you sure you're not recording your guitar facing either your pc monitor, or your pc tower? That might account for the awful-sounding hiss.

As far as your guitar clarity, are you sure you're recording at the highest possible recording level you can within CEP using the db meters at the bottom?

Both of these minor adjustments made worlds of difference to my recording....I had the exact problems you are describing!

namtrab - sorry, I'm not clear on this:

"Are you sure you're not recording your guitar facing either your pc monitor, or your pc tower?"

What exactly was the problem you had? Was it when the mic faced toward the computer gear, or when it faced away? And how close to the computer gear was it? And how did you solve it?

Dan was talking about an 'awful hiss'. I had a similar problem when recording, due to the fact that I was holding my guitar while I was sitting right in front of my pc. I thought maybe he was doing the same. To solve it, I just turned around, so the pickups weren't facing my pc or my pc monitor. As far as the mic, I have it across the room from my pc gear......there was no problem there.

The same happened to me, Namtrab101. I was using a Squier Jazz bass sitting in front of the monitor and it sounded like bacon frying! Since I was too lazy to do it over (or to turn the chair) I went to Transform/Noise Reduction, sampled the noise, then to Edit/Select Entire Waveform, back to Transform/Noise Reduction ... wait a minute, I could have just turned my chair and played it over. The NR program got rid of the, um, noise, though. But the question is about a distant sounding guitar track. Do you have a reverb 'way up? Are you checking the levels? Are you playing it back with maybe a real loud rhythm track? I would immediately suspect levels being set too low. Are you micing the amp? is the mic right on it or back away? Etc.

Dob... what that is is elecromagnetic waves from the tube in the monitor gettin picked up by single coil guitar pickups. It usually doesnt happen with Humbuckers, and if you turn your guitar so that the waves aren't slamming into your pickups head on... it goes away.
