I have a question or two about how to record from guitar to a Tascam 788. I have a Digtech 2120 and am wondering if I can go directly from that into the Tascam. If I decide to mic my amp (Crate Blue Voodoo 120) it, would a Shure 57 be ok for that, and what kind of cord would I have to buy? Thanks.

You can go direct, I have recorded guitar many ways with the 788... Use input D and be sure to select Guitar at the input... And yes the SM57 is a good choice.... I have recorded the guitar directly in, I have used the output of a few effects pedals as well as from my amps line out... Also be sure that everything you are plugging in is turned off and down....

A electric guitar and amplifier are an instrument and need to be miked to get the right sound. The amp's speaker gives it the voice. (Eric Clapton-Jimi Hendrix-George Benson for example). An acoustic guitar is a voice and needs to be miked with enough clean gain to give it's voice. (Doc Watson-Andres Segovia). Pluggin an electric guitar direct into the recorder is ok for scratch or songwriting ideas. But determine what voice you want in the final song, (electric or acoustic) then set about getting the cleanest sound onto the song.
