I'm a home guitar recorder and have used the Line 6 POD to record and it wasn't too bad. It belonged to a friend of mine so I'm looking for my own amp. I'm looking for simply a Metallica/Pantera type distortion as good as it can get without spending too much. Does anyone out there have any suggestions for me on the lower price range, say $200-$400?

AWESOME little amp for recording! and definately in your price range;)

Cube 60

Pick up a Roland Cube 60 and be done with it, you can get the sounds you're looking for. You can go direct or mic it up for recording, and is also loud enough to compete in a full band setting.

Cheers:)

You might just buy a Line 6 Live XT for yourself. I recorded a guy through one and, using the SPDIF out, it was perfectly silent. It was the first time I'd recorded electric guitar without having to do some serious noise reduction after.

It's very flexible, and you can use it live by plugging into the PA.

Any amp you buy in the same price range will be pretty limited in what it can do.

True that..and down the line you could get one of those blackheart amps and amplify the xt..thats what i plan to do.

I use a Vox Modeling amp and that would be my recommendation. Rolland cubes are good too.

While it's great to get people's opinions I think that with amps there's nothing better than trying a bunch out in music stores. Go on a wet Wednesday afternoon when the place is quiet, take your own guitar and any store worth its salt should be happy to let you play through a few amps. I say this as guitar tone is so subjective.

If you find an amp you like then it should be fairly easy to get that sound when recording, with decent mics. Obviously you will need something that sounds OK at a volume you can record with, ie usually not too loud unless you have understanding neighbours.

One other point. I usually find that a guitar amp speaker of 12-inches is necessary when recording. Speakers smaller than that have never worked for me. BUT I am sure there are exceptions and people are doing fine with smaller speakers . . . just sharing my experience. (And I am experimenting with tiny speakers myself just to test my own theory.)

Good luck with your search.

PS One amp I love is the old Session / Sessionette amps from the 80s. I have three, all bought for under £100 each on eBay and all sound great. Worth looking around for if you can, but try before you buy as they are prone to scratchy pots that aren't always cured with switchcleaner.

I just picked up a Marshall MG10cd through trading unused gear and I'm blown away. I have been using a POD2 and a few other setups but this thing kills. Reciept in the box shows he paid $69.95 . I just stuck a mic in front of it and hit record. Can't say enough good things about it. I'll try to post something on soundclick.

thats a great amp
but
your going to need to add a distortion pedal for heavy stuff

the boss ds-1 is cheap and works really well
No... it don't have a dirty channell:D
I use a Boss GT-8 in front of the amp that has good hum-free overdrive/distortion chanell so that is not a really big deal.

i think the way i said that came out wrong

i meant to inform him that he would need a pedal
NOT to tell you that it was a bad suggestion

personally the black heart is the best thing for cheap recording
and once you grow out of that theres the orange tiny terror
