Guitar Recording Sounds Bad

Hi, my guitar recordings are sounding really bad, and not nearly as good as they do through the amp. Here is my signal chain:

Ibanez RG370DX ----> 6505+112 --> SM57 ----> Audio Kontrol 1 ------> Computer

-It's not clipping

-I have tried different mic positions

-It sounds perfectly fine when playing through the amp

Any ideas on why it could sound so bad?

Depending on the sound you are trying to capture >>> less distortion/drive will sound better (and more distorted) when recording. You need to get your head down to where the mic is positioned to 'hear what it hears', otherwise you are also hearing the sound of your room.

There is a bit of technical wizardry you can employ for that last task. Called headphones.

Re-amping is also a technique worth consideration.

If you can't get a good sound out of a 57 after trying different placements (my go to is pointing the mic at the point where the dust cover meets the cone), then it isn't an engineering problem. That is just what the amp sounds like to the mic.. When you are recording, it doesn't matter what the amp sounds like in the room. It only matters what it sounds like to the mic.

If you get it sounding good in the mic, you will be much better off anyway. Anyone but you and your band mates will hear your guitar through a mic. Either on a recording or through a pa system, your guitar will most likely be heard through a 57.. Get that sound together and you will be golden.
