Guitar players, what’s in your studio recording rack?

Guitar into amp....
Beyer m160 ribbon in front of amp, large-dia in back....

That's my recording rack!

I just mic the amp to an ART tube MP, then to tape. I don't like plug ins, and don't care for too much effect on my guitar anyway. I mean, other than distortion.

I'm cheap, and a hack. So I either go direct into a Meek VC1Q or through my J-station.

Kinda hard to say.

Basically it goes like this:

Guitar->RP-100->line in on my Crate 150 watt on a clean, flat, digital "tube" setting->sm57->Art Tube Preamp-> recorder

Or for direct, I'll just take out the amp and the 57.

The uncertainty is in the RP-100. It's almost always a distorted setting of the Mesa Boogie type and there is some eq, compression, and gating going on. I don't know how much because I keep those settings at default and run through all the presets with all different amp combinations until I get what I need. So technically, I'm kinda lying when I say I record "flat". But no reverb, delay, flange or any other processing is done once the signal leaves the modeller.

Pod, that's all.

Was toying with the idea of getting a Roger Linn Adrenalin, but they seem to have disapeared.

I love Steves Tone. He doesn't always use the eventides. Can I ask what the last Vai album you have listened to Aaron?

SoMm

Well, I'll admit I'm not familiar with Steve's newest stuff. I haven't heard UltraWorld, or whatever it's called. Probably the last album of his I really know well would be Passion and Warfare, which is probably a good 10 (!!) years old by now. Probably my favorite Vai stuff is Eat 'Em and Smile and the one album he did with Whitesnake (stop laughing at me..... no, seriously, stop laughing at me!).

I've admired his playing for a long time, since the before the "Crossroads" days. I've analized the harmonies in "Little Green Men" and "The Attitude Song" a million times. I just have never liked his tone. It sounds so...... strangled.

Just one guy's opinion.

By the way, I thought the "best of" CD he released call "The Seventh Song" (or something like that) was a pretty brilliant and novel concept. That guy sure likes his numbers. It made me go back over his albums and analize the song orders and look for deeper meaning......

I'll record guitar in quite a few different ways, dedpending on what I want to hear. I RARELY record any kind of time based effects. I prefere a mic in front of an amp (personally I have a Line6 AX2 and an old Peavey Bandit I like). As far as direct recording goes, I have and use a POD, a J Station, an ART SGX2000, a Tom Sholtz Rockman and a Hughes & Kettner BATT. No pedels except for a Cry Baby wah and a Buddah wah.

Man you really are a gear slut.

I use a Real Tube (ECC82) into either a retubed Mig60 or a retubed Hot Rod Deluxe.

When I want to trip out, I plug my "rack" into the fx loop:
Omnifex DDX 1024 - digital delay

lol

Charvel with EMG S-81 -> dbx576 -> Roland gp100 -> Marshall 8004 (2x40W valvestate) -> 2x12 Yamaha cab. -> Line Audio CM2 -> Mackie -> Computer

Just use a GT-6 straight into a Masterlink
Huh? The Masterlink is NOT a multi-track recorder, so how does that help???

(or are you recording an album of nothing but solos!?!?!)

...er...I meant my 2" 24 track MCI.......yeah....that's what I meant....

looks like digital / rack gear is still popular underground, just not being spoon fed to us by Guitar World

(guitar) PRS 25th anniversary / 1977 Les Paul - (Amp & Cab) Soldano SLO 100 w/ mesa 4x12 cab- (Mic Setup) e609 & MD421-(Preamp) Manley Dual Mono Microphone Preamp- (Multitrack) MCI JH 24 / Pro Tools 10 HD

(Post FX) I actually like D-verb for some of the guitar verbs We also have a Lexicon MX 300 which has some cool sounds. for delay We have Echo Boy and a PCM 41.
