Has anyone out there ever had to mess with magnetic poll height on their pickups? I'd like to know what criteria the factories use when these are set - it certainly isn't volume alone.

My LP Studio can really bark at me at times through the bass strings (especially the big open E). This can be tough to regulate through pick attack when playing arpeggiated notes at clean high volume.

Any tips on the pickup adjustment?
thanks

Depends on the pickup type, string height, string gauge and even the neck adjustment.

Make sure your neck is adjusted first for string height and playability. Once this is set then go to the pickup tables the manufacturers post on their sites
www.fender.com is one I know of. They post the string height and pickup heights along with adjustment procedures.

Finally, you can deviate from their tables for your own unique sound but they are a good place to start.

okok, this is what you HAVE to do if you ever want to be good.

adjust them youself... play it a bunch, adjust some more, play...until it SOUNDS really good to you. balanced and full.

once thats done. you'll rule.

I adjusted my pickup, to get more volume out of the treble strings, just by turning the philips head screw next to the pickup, to raise the pickup closer to the strings on one side.

Wow, what a difference!!!
