If you haven't guessed I'm looking for theories on mixing guitars. I'm doin my first PT project and I'm double tracking the guitars. Two tracks per take two takes. Left and right. I find if I pan one of the takes 50L and 21R and the other 50R and 21L they overlap sonic space and not leave holes when the other stops. Any suggestions, I'm still tracking but I'm about draw up a stereo field matrix or map to somewhat standardize the panning of my whole project.

What are the 21R and 21L for?
Alot of pan pots go from "0" (center) to R63 and L63 (all the way Right or Left). So, 21R would be a little less than halfway to the right.

(I hope that's what he means...if not, nevermind)

I know that. What I meant was, it sounded like he was, for example, panning guitar track 1 to L50, and then a copy of it to R21. And then track 2 to R50 and a copy of it to L21. I was trying to ascertain that, as if it is the case I was gonna say "perhaps avoid doing that". :)

Ah, I see. Yes, that would be good advice.

Are you just mixing guitar, or do you have other instruments that you have to or already have mixed?

Stop panning by theory or whatever....
Listen to the guitar and its roll for a given song.

If the part is rhythmic and contributing to the overall groove of the song, keep it rooted, or 'centered' in the mix.

If the guitar part is mostly counterpoint, lead, contrast, and color.,..give it some space and bounce it around the field.

That's what I would do anyway....
