Has anyone had to do this simple task on a Gibson LP? I would like to replace the standard nut with an Earvana Compensated Nut and am wondering whether there's any alternative to purchasing the proper slotting files to achieve the right string height. (For feeler gauges I plan on using spark gapping tools.)

STEWMAC.com sells these files for about $72 (for all 6) plus s&h which may be reasonable, but it is a bit much for a one-time job. Should I not proceed without them?

Thanks for any advise you can offer.

P.S. if anyone is interested in this special type of nut which promises to improve intonation problems, look here:

Don't do it.Filing string slots is a bit tricky.Any deviation from the horizontal will move your string contact point and defeat the purpose of your nice, expensive, specially intonated nut!
Believe me,I'm all for guys doing their own work on their own axes.Maybe I've got it wrong and you've already got the skills and the experience but only lack the tools. But this is NOT a simple job as you suggest. My advise would be to have your local tech handle this one for you.
