Guitar input

I have a friend who has a Crystal onboard soundcard on his p2 400 running winME, CWPA9. He is DI'ing his guitar directly into his computer's mic input for a clean sound. The problem is that even with the mic input turned almost all the way down the clean sound distorts and peaks. The boost is not on. I've tried changing setting and am unable to get it to work. Any suggestions??? If all else fails I'm going to try to install and older soundblaster soundcard I have lying around and see if it works. Anyone have any other suggestions???

line in, not mic in

and do not plug guitar directly in, use a POD or something similar to adjust the signal to be line level compliant.
 
Never use the mic input for anything, its made for computer mics and is pretty much useless, use the line-in, a good preamp would also help.
