Guitar Effects On Bass?

Hey,
Just asking peoples advice on effects. I'm wanting a distortion pedal for my bass and was wondering if i need to buy a special bass distortion / overdrive (like the one boss do), or if any normal guitar pedal would do. I'm presuming I can just use any (I'm looking at maybe a Big Muff), but thought id check before i buy one online rather than going to try one out!
Thanks,
James

It's in the ear of the beholder.
My advice is to go to the store and try them out.
What one person likes, you may not. Let your own ears be your judge.

To answer your question, yes, you can use guitar effects on your bass, although "bass effects" boxes are geared towards a bass. I use a wah-wah pedal and a guitar compressor and a maximiser on my bass, but I also use my bass amp in conjunction with my Marshall on my guitar too. Effects are effects no matter what you use them on. It's all in the sound that you want.

And "bass effect boxes" should track the lower notes better than "guitar effect boxes".

I use my guitar's big muff for my bass and the sound is pretty decent, though i'm not too big on the distorted bass sound. Also, my DL4 and Crybaby work just fine with bass :D.
