Ok, so I'm in the market for a new guitar in the $1000 range. I've looked around a lot and so far I'm most pleased with the Schecter C1-Plus.

But here's what gets me, I have found about 20 guitars in this price range that would be good, if it weren't for the fact that they all have vibrato tailpieces. Why are there so few guitars with string though body design right now? I seem to remember more options being available a couple years ago.

To me this is like selling a car an not offering a manual transmission! It frustrated me to the point of checking out www.warmoth.com to see what it would cost to buy a guitar built the way I want. But that ended up putting me WAY over budget.

I don't see a whole lot of quality in the $1000 range right now, and I can't justify spending $5000 on a Parker or PRS.

Why should I have to settle for something that doesn't suit my needs at this price range?

So what is this "ideal" guitar? There are a couple of different options...

There are tons of great deals on used gear out there - Hamer USA models go for under a grand ALL the time and are probably at least equal to PRS quality. Even some Mcinturff guitars are going for under a grand on eBay.

Also, if you were seriously looking at Warmoth, did you check the thrift shop? They have some good prices on stuff there sometimes. I'm ot sure what you are looking to build that will get you WAY over $1000...

Depending on what you are looking for, USA Custom guitars just updated their web specials section - you could get a great quality body and neck for $225 or so. You'd either have to finish it yourself or pay someone to do it (around $200), but you'd still be way under budget. (I think all their web specials are either ash or alder bodies, though, so it may not be what you are looking for...)

I dunno - there's tons out there in that range. I just built my USA Custom strat for under $1000, and it is amazing. (And I still have GAS, which is why I'm helping you shop right now! :D )

Doh!

*Smacks head*

I can't believe I forgot Godin... especially since they're a Canadian manufacturer!!
Thanks for the help guys, I knew I'd get some help from this BBS!!

ease up Happy Hour...for a $grand$ of your hard-earned cash no one is going to force you to take possession of some stupid-ass vibrato tail-piece...if you don't want certain hardware on your new guitar I'm pretty sure all ya gotta do is say so, and they'll configure it exactly the way you want it...the reason so many of the axes that you've been looking at are configured the way they are is because they're trying to offer up what is "popular" and what they can make the most $ on...don't be offended by it, just tell the fuckers what you want and be done with it...the price might even come down.

btw, seein as how you don't really seem interested in gibsons or fenders, you should check out the peavey wolfgangs...the necks on these things are of excellent craftsmanship, and each one is meticulously set-up at the factory...

I keep hearing that, and I don't understand why if that's true I can't find a single US Hamer to try. I've been in the market for such a guitar for a year now. I've tried everything out there - except an American Hamer. Nobody carries them. I ask around and every dealer says they "used to, but they didn't sell very well". I have found one dealer that carries the Korean models, and I found the necks to be way too big for me and the craftmanship to be pretty bad (you know - sort of like Gibson).

I'm not saying they aren't good guitars. It just seems to me that if they were I could at least find one somewhere to test.

Thoughts?

I'm not joking - I think lackluster sales could be due to the fact that Hamer has the biggest, ugliest headstock shape ever. But at least the stark white logo sucks.

Let's see...my Parker Fly Deluxe was $1300 new. I got my PRS for $1100 used in perfect shape. I've seen Parker Fly's go for $900 used these days.

Your only problem is you're not looking in the right places.

Sounds like you know what you are looking for and what you want. Forget the big name brands and go find the guitar of your dreams, it's out there somewhere.
