Guitar and midi

hey guys, im noticing on a lot of multi effect processors there is a midi input output, what types of things would you use these for on your computer for you multi effect processor, could someone give me an example? thanks
 
Well to update firmware or download new patches for one thing.
 
so how exactly does this work? i mean if you are going to update lets say a patch on your effect board how does midi do this via the computer?
 
I don't believe you'd use the MIDI with your computer (except in my example below), but with an external MIDI controller you could change parameters on your multi FX processor. Sometimes easier than using the processor itself, especially if you are changing more than one thing and one processor.

kinda related, but not...

I have a Roland GR33 guitar synth that has MIDI outs and of course that allows controlling other MIDI controlable sound modules, as an example....or recording MIDI into the computer. But that requires a special pickup on my guitar and the conversion to MIDI in my GR33.

I think that's what you were asking.:)

TelePaul, What about effects units that pre-date Usb? i'm thinking VG-8 and company.
 
so how do the patch changes work on a program, perhaps someone could give me an example of how they do it on their software

Well, the VG-8 was pretty damn revolutionary in it's time (or prime). That was before the Pod and the Variax took over. It simulates not only amps but types of guitars. and you can program some really nice patches if you go deep into its bowels. I still use it quite a bit for live gigs, since i can get many different types of sounds out of it with only one guitar. Plus it uses a hexaphonic pickup, so it's pretty flexible in terms of string separating ect...

Check out Sting's "A thousand years". the sound he's getting for the melodic riff is the VG-8. it actually sounds like a type of low flute.
