Guitar Player magazine has launched it's own version of American Idol, called Guitar Hero and last year they asked for submissions from all over the world.

I, at first, didn't really want to participate, because I tend to think I would choke in those kinds of situations, but my wife egged me on, so I did send a C.D. of one track, per the rules, last summer.

When I didn't hear back from them, I thought I hadn't gotten through.

Until I received a phone call Thursday night from the Managing Editor and Chief, saying that they were blown away by my track and out of thousands of submissions, I've made the FINAL 10!

As it turns out, they will be flying me to Cleveland the weekend of June 10-12 to perform one song of my choice, with a live band at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in front of judges Steve Lukather (Toto), Joe Satriani and others.

It will be webcast all over the planet, and so forth.

Eeeeeeek!

Needless to say, I'm excited and terrified.

From the site:

GP’s Guitar Hero 2005 is part of the CMJ/RockFest, which is being held all over Cleveland during the weekend of June 10-12. The winner of GP’s Guitar Hero will receive a mammoth gear package, as well as get one of their songs included on CMJ’s New Music Monthly CD that reaches tens of thousands of music business executives and tastemakers across North America. Guitar Hero 2005 is sponsored by Gibson and Audio-Technica.

Here's the track that got me there...it's just me playing over a Brecker Bros backing track:

Anyway, that's the bottom line, just sharing my shock and horror of it all.

Peace,

Scott

Scott...you are truely blessed.

waaaaaaay to go!!!

Congratulations man. That is some smoking playing.

I only have one small bit of constructive criticism:

It seems like when you come out of those long, 16th-note runs, you're landing on a sustained downbeat note 95% of the time. I think if you mixed that up a bit (came out on the upbeat, third 16th, etc.), it would add another dimension to the solos.

But this is really nitpicky. Great playing, and best of luck in the competition.

Very cool! Congrats and good luck in June!

Do they expect you to play an original tune, or absolutely anything? Maybe Satch will ask you to open for him on the next tour ;)

BTW, don't forget to thank your wife for pushing you to do this. :)

You rock, bro. Congrats, and be sure to have fun with it.

WOooooooooooooW...!!!!!!!.....WOoooooooooooW!!!......WOoooooooooW..!!!

CONGRATULATIONS

I like how you take the time to articulate your notes, so that the phrases are interesting even when they aren't the fastest or the highest parts that you play. When I listen to those parts I think, "Hey, I can almost play that fast, but if I did I don't think I could say something that cool." Emphasize that & you'll kill 'em all!

OK we are all green with envy (just kidding) but seriously on behalf of the rest of us that aren't getting such a once in a lifetime opportunity like you are, we all wish you the best. Take a deep breath and blow their socks off.

I'm not green with envy. Mostly because I'm not a guitar player. :D

Therefore, you have my full support!!!

Go win it!!!

Carl

I'll do my best!

Peace,
