Between being and nothing
I redid the guitar parts on my song "Just This Side of Eden". There are actually three guitars playing on this song now: Two miced acoustic takes placed at left and right, and the original DI take that's been placed in the middle. I now realize that either I should have fixed some mistakes in that original DI file, or not used it all together because it has a some "stray" strings being played that I was VERY careful not to play in the new version.

To say that I'm not the world's best guitar player is an understatement :D I was playing along with a metronome. I HOPE I don't come off too stilted. I also attempted to add some ambience by adding LOTS of reverb. I'm kinda thinking I over did it, er, somewhat. :D

Anyway, have a listen, and let me know what you think:

Knock yerself out, kiddies! :D

Hmmpf....
Unfortunately, the guitar playing does not really do justice to the song. I like the song a lot, but the guitar sort fo has that "amaturish" feel to it...
The vocals sound pretty damn good. You were a little generous with the reverb, but that's a matter of taste, I guess.

I'd offer to colaborate and re-record the guitar track, but my playing is also far from professional.
I'de love to lay a piano track, if you want.

Guit sounds synthetic almost...super tinny...I would lose the DI track and work with the mic-ed tracks...
I could be wrong but it also sounds like your strings are dead...
There seems to be no resonnance...warmth...bass response...what kind of mic are you using?

I like the tune Shaky and I also agree that there is just a tad bit too much verb on your vox...but damn girl...you sing good :D
Got that real folkie sound to your vox...ya know?

"clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the Right..." DAMN!! What IS that song?!?!?! I know it, it's just...arg!!!

Anyway... thanks for the comments. :D

I own a baby Taylor guitar. It doesn't seem to give out a lot of bass. And used an SP B1 mic to mike it. Maybe I'm not micing it right? I also have a feeling that I may have eq'ed the guitar's mids a little too much.

Dumb question - how can strings be "dead"?

When they sound flat and lifeless, don't sustain as well, and you notice the intonation starts going off-tune..... all these are signs of dead strings.....

You've got a great voice, it doesn't need to be hiden behind all that reverb. The guitar playing (timing issues) and processing (too bright) are also distracting from your voice.

Try pointing the mic more toward the sound hole to pick up more bass. Micing acoustics is a touchy/feely thing, different for every guitar. I mic my Taylor by pointing a NT1 at the 12th fret. If I point it towards the sound hole it immediately becomes boomy. Sounds like you have the opposite problem.

One other idea. If you like the way the guitar sounds in your right or left ear, place the mic near the ear that sounds best and you'll record exactly what you hear...don't know if that made sense...

Thanks Blue Bear!

Looks like I'll have to have it restringed again. :rolleyes

Bright processing...yep, sounds like an EQ issue. Definitely look into that...

Phyl, I tried the 12th fret thing. I guess I need to go toward the sound hole next time...

i still really like this song but that guitar is getting worse!

how about just one guitar track using the B1 at the 12 fret angled in towards the sound hole?

the reverb sounds a little heavy to me as well.

You seem to have a real strong vision of your song.
Your voice is GOOD and probably doesn't need effects.
You need of course, to be backed up by proper musicians.
Personally, I would be happy to do a guitar track for you and I'm sure there are lots of competant musicians who would like to work with you.

I`m in touch on this tune. Very nice songwriting. Did I mention that I love your voice, it has a nourishing quality to me. The verb on it sounds really good, not let me say the voice makes the verb sound really good.. maybe a little much bit still sounds sweet. The guitar chords are all in time and distinct but could use a little fluidity to the presentation. :)

Eric,

I agree. the guitars sound a lot worse, now that I'm hearing it again.

I'm going to have my guitar restringed this weekend, and try again. Probably with just one guitar track this time. Or else just take one of the current acoustic guitar tracks and see what I can do.

Heavy, if you want to take a shot at it, go for it. Lemme know what you want to do.

Toki, thanks! Lord knows, I'm trying!

Nice vocals on this one Helen, i definitely think they flowed more improved intonation etc from your previous.

I hear the noise floor on the first two seconds of your recording, there may be nothing you can do about that when you're capturing audio but you could clip the section before you start playing and fade in to prevent that first few seconds of hiss.

The DI guit is too shrill imo, new strings DO help a lot. Play them for an hour or two before you track, stretch em and you'll notice the difference.

Thanks, K. I usually do that, but I forgot to get rid of that 10 section (where I count down) before launching. I tried to clip it using Musicmatch (or something)...couldn't get rid of all of it. oh well.

BTW...got my guitar restringed. New round comin up on Monday...
